S&P may cut France rating outlook to negative: report (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Credit rating agency Standard & Poor's could change the outlook for France's triple-A rating to negative within the next 10 days, a French newspaper reported on Monday, citing several sources. Such a move would signal a possible downgrade.

"It could happen within a week, perhaps 10 days," La Tribune quoted a source as saying of a change to the outlook.

The economic and financial daily said on its Web site that S&P had planned to make the announcement last Friday but postponed it for unknown reasons.

The euro briefly dipped on the report, which coincided with news that credit rating agency Moody's could downgrade the subordinated debt of a swathe of euro zone banks.

The euro dipped a third of a cent but quickly recovered to $1.3315 to stand little changed from late in New York on Monday. It had risen more than 1 percent earlier in the day on hopes that European officials would finally make some progress in tackling their debt crisis this week.

France's ratings outlook is currently stable with S&P, but there have been rumors for months of a possible downgrade by one or more of the ratings agencies.

On November 10, Standard & Poor's mistakenly announced it had cut the nation's rating, frightening investors already anxious over Europe's worsening debt crisis.

An S&P spokesman in Melbourne declined to comment on the report.

Perry confuses voting age in NH

(AP) ? You might say Rick Perry courted the youth, but not the whole youth, in a campaign appearance at a New Hampshire college.

Speaking at Saint Anselm on Tuesday, he appealed to students who will be at least 21 before Election Day to vote for him.

As for those younger than 21, he merely asked them to work hard on his behalf. Doesn't he want their votes, too?

It turns out Perry didn't know or had forgotten that the voting age in America is 18.

The flub caused some whispers in the crowd.

In a recent presidential debate, Perry forgot a key element of his plan to reduce the size of government.

James Moore: All Fall Down

If the Republican presidential nominating race wasn't actually intended as a serious endeavor, it could be mistaken for a comedy routine. As one more woman makes up another story about Herman Cain's sexual proclivities, Rick Perry struggles to understand who is eligible to vote in the democracy he wants to lead. Mitt Romney changes positions as often as a light-hitting utility infielder; Michele Bachmann prompts questions about what is required to become a member of the House Intelligence Committee; Ron Paul makes enough sense to scare the electorate; Newt Gingrich has reached the fifth level of hypocrisy and thinks his contradictions are invisible or meaningless, while Jon Huntsman, who has been far too rational and informed to be riding in the GOP clown car, stands off to the side and wonders how he is not even qualified to be considered for the Iowa debate on December 10.

The departure of Mr. Cain, who is apparently being besieged by lying women who are puppets of Democratic operatives afraid he will win the White House, will not make things any simpler for GOP primary voters. Cain's surge happened after Perry mentioned that he supported in-state tuition for the children of undocumented workers. As Cain has been hammered by revelations involving his personal life, Gingrich has acquired enough support to lead the race, most of which likely came from Cain. Perry's numbers did not tick back up and Romney's stayed frozen in the high teens and low twenties. All of those voters who began dating other people when Perry faltered ended up also leaving Cain but still hadn't forgiven Romney for being Romney or Perry for being a dumbass.

What do they do with Cain gone?

The Gingrich team wants everyone to believe he is now inevitable. But there are two forces in control of most of the GOP primary and they have issues with Newt. What will the values voters and evangelicals make of a man who has had mistresses and three marriages? The Tea Party certainly can't be very excited about a candidate who has made millions advising participants in the scam that fueled Wall Street's mortgage collapse, and even though he claims he's never been a lobbyist and has only sold access to his inordinately large brain, Gingrich has made millions more getting his clients in front of members of congress. The Tea Party is not likely to favor his full r?sum?. Gingrich's baggage fills up three boxcars on the campaign train, and one of them is for Tiffany jewelry containers.

Mitt Romney is probably one of the leading GOP candidates with an actual statistical chance of beating President Obama but he seemingly cannot win his party's nomination. Romney is moderate enough to do well in the general election but not sufficiently right wing to win the primary. His problems, already deconstructed a million times, center around convincing GOP voters that just because he approved a state health care plan in Massachusetts doesn't mean he wants one for the rest of the country, and just because he said he'd be stronger on gay rights than Teddy Kennedy when he ran against him for the U.S. Senate doesn't mean he believes in gay marriage now, and just because he refused to sign the pledge to end federal funding to hospitals that provide abortions doesn't mean he supports woman's right to choose, and just because he said he thinks global warming is real doesn't mean he thinks humans are the cause. Romney's political cravenness approaches Senator John McCain's, who pegged the needle when he called Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson "agents of intolerance" in one election and then ran to seek their endorsements the next time he chased after the presidency.

Romney's other problem, of course, is his religion. He doesn't talk about it, except for a speech he gave in Texas four years ago, which he hoped had put the matter to perpetual rest. But it hasn't. Various surveys show that white, southern, Christian evangelicals will not vote for a Mormon because the overwhelming majority does not view the religion as part of Christendom. The hypocrisy in this position is both entertaining and harmful to Republican presidential aspirations; apparently Moses tablet(s) brought down from the mountain are more believable than the Angel Moroni's golden tablets delivered to Joseph Smith. Regardless, no Republican will win the White House without successfully sweeping the south in the general election in 2012 and a Mormon candidate will apparently reduce enthusiasm and turnout among white, Christian voters. Mitt will stay stuck at about twenty percent regardless of how many GOP power brokers urge the voters to rally around his flag.

Which brings us to the wretched remainders.

Bachmann and Paul have undeniable electability issues, Rick Santorum is barely worth mentioning, and Jon Huntsman is too sane, considerate, well informed, capable on the issues, rational, analytical, thoughtful, and Mormon to have a chance within his chosen political party.

That leaves only the dumb one.

When the bright lights reveal more of Newt's warts than voters want to see, there will be no place left for GOP voters to seek sanctuary. The unfaithful and undecideds will have to reconsider Rick Perry. The values voters will realize again that he is with them on gay marriage and Jesus and global warming and abortion and government health care. TP-ers will conclude he's their best chance to show they have the power to destroy government. These voters don't care that Perry is a bit of a dolt on issues; they love him because he thinks like they do and there is no one else on the GOP primary ballot who completely fits that description. Unfortunately, every time a reporter considers writing a comeback narrative for Perry, the Texas governor begins talking and prompts second thoughts about how convincing such an article might ever be for readers.

Republicans must be frustrated as hell. They are facing an incumbent president who most polls show is mortally wounded and yet the GOP cannot find an acceptable, unifying candidate with prospects of victory. The fact that Herman Cain and Rick Perry have survived this long is an indication of the desperation of Republicans. They ought not to worry, though. Sarah Palin has taken up residence in Arizona.

And word is that she is tanned, rested, and ready.

Apple beats Android in British market in October (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The long-awaited iPhone 4S launch helped Apple Inc (AAPL.O) take top spot in the British smartphone market in October, overtaking phones using Google Inc's (GOOG.O) Android platform, data from research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech showed on Monday.

"Apple took a whopping 42.8 percent share of all smartphone sales, giving it a significant lead over Android -- a feat many thought was impossible," Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at the firm, said in a statement.

"With nearly a year and a half between iPhone launches there has been huge pent-up demand for a new Apple device," he said.

In October Google's Android had 35 percent of the British smartphone market, often seen as the indicator for the rest of Europe.

For the 12 weeks to end-October Android was still ahead of Apple, while Research In Motion Ltd (RIM.TO) held on to its 20 percent share. Nokia Oyj (NOK1V.HE) had 4 percent and Microsoft Corp's (MSFT.O) Windows Phone platform 1 percent share.

Nokia started to sell its first Windows Phone in Britain in mid November.

Televangelist Joel Osteen: Obama ???has reached out to us??? [VIDEO] (Daily Caller)

Televangelist and senior pastor of Houston?s Lakewood Church Joel Osteen explained on Fox News Channel?s ?Huckabee? over the weekend that President Barack?Obama reached out to Osteen and Lakewood.

?He has reached out to us,? Osteen said. ?And we have done some of the leadership things there at the White House with him and been able to pray with him ? just simple things like that. And he?s been very kind and friendly to our ministry.?

A number of Americans still have questions about Obama?s religious beliefs. Whether it is due to his 20 year?attendance?at the Rev. Jeremiah Wright?s Trinity United Church, polls indicating that?12 percent?of Americans still believe that he is a Muslim, or the first family?s decision to not regularly attend church, the president?s Christian faith has not been an easy issue for the White House.

Earlier in the segment, host Mike Huckabee delved into Osteen?s thoughts on if Obama should attend church more regularly. Osteen was forgiving.

?You know I think it would be great. You know, I am probably too full of mercy and to say, you know, maybe all the things that come with the presidency, the security and all that ? maybe that plays into it,? Osteen said. ?But I believe he loves the Lord and things. I don?t know. But in the ideal world, yes [he would attend regularly].?

Obama explained in 2010 that he will not be joining a church while president because it is too disruptive.

In 2010, Osteen attended Obama?s Easter breakfast at the White House.

Known for trying to stay out of partisan politics, Osteen has also spoken highly of ? and hosted?? a number of Republicans at his Lakewood church, including Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

Last chance to save Kyoto deal at climate talks (Reuters)

DURBAN (Reuters) ? Countries will make a last ditch effort to save a dying Kyoto Protocol at global climate talks starting on Monday aimed at cutting the greenhouse gas emissions blamed by scientists for rising sea levels, intense storms and crop failures.

Kyoto, which was adopted in 1997 and entered into force in 2005, commits most developed states to binding emissions targets. The talks are the last chance to set another round of targets before the first commitment period ends in 2012.

Major parties have been at loggerheads for years, warnings of climate disaster are becoming more dire and diplomats worry whether host South Africa is up to the challenge of brokering the tough discussions among nearly 200 countries that run from Monday to December 9 in the coastal city of Durban.

There is hope for a deal to help developing countries most hurt by global warming and a stop-gap measure to save the protocol. There is also a chance advanced economies responsible for most emissions will pledge deeper cuts at the talks known as the Conference of the Parties, or COP 17.

But the debt crisis hitting the euro zone and the United States makes it unlikely those areas will provide more aid or impose new measures that could hurt their growth prospects.

"The South Africans are desperate to ensure that the COP does not fail, but they will not be able to deliver much," said Ian Fry, lead negotiator for the tiny Pacific island nation of Tuvalu, which could be erased by rising sea levels.

Fry blamed the United States, which has not ratified Kyoto, for blocking progress and said: "The EU seems to be going weak at the knees and will opt for a soft continuation of the Kyoto Protocol with a possible review process in 2015 to think about new legal options."

Envoys said there may be a political deal struck with a new set of binding targets, but only the European Union, New Zealand, Australia, Norway and Switzerland are likely to sign up at best. Any accord depends on China and the United States, the world's top emitters, agreeing binding action under a wider deal by 2015, something both have resisted for years.

China is unwilling to make any commitments until Washington does while Russia, Japan and Canada say they will not sign up to a second commitment period unless the biggest emitters do too.

Emerging countries insist Kyoto must be extended and that rich nations, which have historically emitted most greenhouse gas pollution, should take on tougher targets to ensure they do their fair share in the fight against climate change.

Developing nations say carbon caps could hurt their growth and programmes to lift millions out of poverty.

HIGH STAKES

The stakes are high, with many experts urging immediate action. This month, two separate U.N. reports said greenhouse gases had reached record levels in the atmosphere while a warming climate is expected to lead to heavier rainfall, more floods, stronger cyclones and more intense droughts.

Despite individual emissions-cut pledges from countries and the terms of the Kyoto pact, the United Nations, International Energy Agency and others say this is not enough to prevent the planet heating up beyond 2 degrees Celsius.

Global average temperatures could rise by 3-6 degrees by the end of the century if governments fail to contain greenhouse gas emissions, bringing unprecedented destruction as glaciers melt and sea levels rise, the OECD said last week.

The warning from the OECD, whose main paymasters are the United States and other developed economies, underscored fears that the commitment to curb climate-heating gases could falter at a time when much of the world is deep in debt.

"The COP is being held on the African continent which bears the greatest social injustices due to the impacts of climate change," environmental group Greenpeace said.

Rich nations have committed to a goal of providing $100 billion a year in climate cash by 2020, which the Green Climate Fund will help manage. But the United States and Saudi Arabia have objected to some aspects of the fund's design.

South Africa has said it wants to advance an African agenda at the conference but is seen by many diplomats as not having the diplomatic muscle or prestige to broker complex talks.

As the world's poorest continent, Africa is also the most vulnerable to the extreme weather conditions and rising sea levels brought by climate change. In the Horn of Africa, some 13 million people are going hungry due to prolonged drought. In Somalia, the crisis is compounded by conflict.

Animal Architecture / Wildlife build the most amazing things

By Shannon M. Nass, Special to the Post-Gazette

FINLEYVILLE, Pa. -- Wide-eyed with excitement and wonder, 4-year-old Natalie Noll of Monongahela bounded across the field with a loosely woven bowl of rootlets and dried grasses cupped in her tiny hands.

"I found one! I found one!" she shouted to the group of parents and children who stood peering up into a stand of trees.

Natalie stood breathless and expectant as she slowly revealed her treasure -- a chipping sparrow nest she had found under a conifer tree.

The group, which included Natalie's sisters Abby, 13, Sarah, 12, Rebecca, 10, and brother Andrew, 8, oohed and aahed over the discovery before fixing their gazes on a gray catbird's nest that had been retrieved from a tree above.

The nests were two of many wildlife homes unearthed during the Discovering Animal Architecture Home School Outdoor Classroom program Nov. 10 at Mingo Creek County Par.

A similar event, Nature Scavenger Hunt, will be held at Keystone State Park near New Alexandria on Dec. 3 from 2-3 p.m. (register at 724-668-2566 or kpnature@nb.net).

The program at Mingo Creek joined a long list of park events that are geared toward educating children about the outdoors.

"We try to instill in children an appreciation for nature," said Lisa Taylor, program coordinator for Washington County Parks and Recreation. "Our goal is to bring them out here, have a great time, have fun and hopefully they learn something."

Cold temperatures and biting winds did not faze the group of 10 who gathered for the program. Jeff Donahue, Mingo Creek's superintendent of recreation, sparked curiosity by passing around a bald-faced hornet's nest that had been collected at the park. The children took turns feeling the paper-like texture of the nest constructed of chewed wood fibers mixed with saliva.

A Baltimore oriole's nest woven entirely of monofilament fishing line was next, followed by a white-eyed vireo's nest and sticks on which beavers had gnawed.

Mary Ann Dolan of Bethel Park was in attendance with her husband Aaron, daughters Emma, 13, and Sarah, 11, and son Matthew, 7. Despite their young ages, the children were surprisingly knowledgeable about the exhibits.

A home-schooling mother, Dolan said their knowledge stems from the importance she places on teaching them about the outdoors.

"Nature is one of God's amazing creations," she said. "There's just so much out there that they can experience. They just so enjoy it, so the more that they can learn about it, the better."

Aaron Dolan, who had taken the day off from work to attend the program with his children, said it's a philosophy he also embraces.

"It's important for them to develop an appreciation for God's creation and be entertained by things other than technology," he said.

After viewing the samples, Donahue and Taylor led the group to a nearby shelter where a mud dauber's nest was spotted hidden in the rafters. The urn-shaped nest was stocked with spiders that had been stung into submission and will serve as food for the dauber's offspring.

What to do: Within its 2,600 acres, the Washington County park includes miles of paved walking and bike trails and 15 miles of bridle trails, picnic shelters, ball fields, playgrounds, an observatory, a leash-free dog area, a model airplane field, two historic covered bridges and an old homestead.

Contact: 724-228-6867.

It was the first time the Dolan children had seen one.

"That was so neat," said Emma.

With curiosity piqued, the group hiked to a field peppered with mole holes before heading into the woods to search for more examples of animal architecture.

Necks craned and heads turned until Sarah Noll's keen eye spotted a yellow jacket's nest in the ground. It had been deserted for the winter. She retrieved the sample from among the dead leaves and carefully inspected the hexagonal cells where food had been stored and young hatched.

The next stop was at a clearing of goldenrod, where Donahue pointed out round, elliptical, and rosette goldenrod ball galls, which are bulges or swellings in stems that house insects. He cut one in two to reveal the cream-colored fly larvae that produced it.

For Emma, that was a highlight of the program.

"The coolest thing I learned was about the galls and where they find them, where the name comes from, what plant the insect lives on and the stage [of life]," she said.

Their appetites for discovery not yet satisfied, the group made a final stop at a forest of conifers where a giant puffball mushroom was discovered.

The children squealed with delight as they took turns stepping on it and dancing in the dark brown powder as trillions of microscopic spores emerged.

As the program came to a close, the children chattered on about their newfound knowledge of animal architecture and favorite discoveries.

"I liked walking through the forest and finding galls and lots of other things that you can find in nature," said Sarah Dolan. "And fresh air."

Matthew summed up his favorite part of the program in one word.

"Everything," he said. "It's pretty awesome to be outside."

Marcel Marx(Andre Wilms) is a shoeshine who makes a sparse living in Le Havre and has more than his share of his debts. His wife Arletty(Kati Outinen) dutifully stands by him while unbeknowst to him, she is very ill. Meanwhile, sounds are heard from a shipping container near the harbor and the police, fearing the worst, are called in. Luckily, all of the would be immigrants seem not the worse for wear. So, Idrissa(Blondin Miguel), a young boy, with a little encouragement from his grandfather makes a break for it. To his credit, Inspector Monet(Jean-Pierre Darroussin) stops a police officer from getting off a shot, allowing him to get away. Outside of the changed setting, "Le Havre" might appear to seem like a normal Aki Kaurismaki movie on the surface, as it contains some of his usual touches, along with Kati Outinen in the cast. On the other hand, it is also one of his most topical movies while also one of his most optimistic, even if it is a little predictable at the end. Regardless, the movie almost feels entirely timeless, as about the only sign of present day technology is the most malicious act being carried out by a cell phone. And I think what Kaurismaki is getting at is that in the past people did not act out of fear and were actually much kinder towards each other. So, my question is do Marcel's neighbors act differently towards him when Idrissa comes into his life or is it because his wife falls ill? Or are the events connected even if they do not at first appear to be so?

Egypt's ElBaradei turns up heat on ruling generals (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Presidential candidate Mohamed ElBaradei has offered to lead a government of national unity, raising the pressure on Egypt's ruling generals amid protests demanding an immediate end to army rule.

Activists are calling on citizens to converge again in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Sunday, a day before the start of a parliamentary election overshadowed by political turmoil and the threat of violence.

The interim government led by Essam Sharaf resigned last week as protests against army rule intensified in Cairo and other cities. The violence has left 42 people dead.

Facing its worst crisis since it pushed President Hosni Mubarak from office during a popular uprising in February, the army has promised a speedier handover to civilians, offered a referendum on military rule and named a new prime minister.

But demonstrators have rejected the military's choice of a 78-year-old veteran of Egyptian politics to lead a new government and say it must hand over power to civilians now.

Some protest groups want ElBaradei to head a civilian body that would replace the ruling military council in supervising Egypt's transition to democracy.

ElBaradei himself is respected among pro-democracy campaigners but many Egyptians view him as out of touch because he spent much of his career outside the country, particularly during his time at the head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog.

His campaign team said late on Saturday he was prepared to drop his bid to be head of state if he is asked to lead a transition government.

It said he has met revolutionary youth coalitions and political parties who had rejected Ganzouri's appointment.

"The political forces and groups stressed that the only way out of the crisis is to form a national coalition government with full powers to manage the transitional period until presidential elections are held," his team said in a statement.

It said ElBaradei would abandon his bid for the presidency if he were asked formally to form a government, "so as to be completely neutral in the interim period."

Many Egyptians yearning for an end to upheaval want the parliamentary election to begin on Monday on schedule and some protesters agree, despite their hostility to those in power.

Abdul Aal Diab, a 46-year-old state employee protesting in Tahrir, said the election should not be mixed up with demands for the departure of Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, who heads the military council.

"This is one thing, that is something else," he said. "Everyone will be in the polling stations come Monday."

"Why are you so sure?" interrupted 27-year-old Mustafa Essam. "I won't go. I have no faith in anyone. We don't know anything about these elections."

Groups chanted slogans against the generals in Tahrir Square overnight as other people wandered among banners, tents and tea stalls fully equipped with chairs and tables that lent the protest an air of permanence.

LONG, COMPLEX VOTE

The prolonged political turmoil has compounded an economic crisis that threatens to make life even harder for the millions of Egyptians living in poverty.

Alarmed by the violence in Cairo and other cities, the United States and the European Union have urged a swift handover to civilian rule in a country where the prolonged political turmoil has compounded economic woes.

The vote due to start on Monday is billed as Egypt's first free and fair election in decades, but a confusing array of candidates and parties and fears of bullying, bribery and violence at polling stations offer voters a daunting challenge.

The complex, drawn-out election to parliament's lower house concludes in early January. Voting for the upper house and the presidency will follow before the end of June.

Reflecting security concerns, Ahmed al-Zind, head of Egypt's Judges Club, told a news conference the organization had taken out private insurance to cover all the judges involved in supervising the election.

Sunday's rally call suggests the loose pro-democracy movement spearheading the protests has rejected the army's decision to recall Kamal Ganzouri, a 78-year-old politician who served as prime minister under Mubarak during the 1990s.

A television clip circulated on Facebook in the past 24 hours shows Ganzouri sitting one seat away from Tantawi on January 25, the first day of Egypt's revolt, as they listen to a speech by former Interior Minister Habib al-Adli, who is on trial with Mubarak on charges of ordering protesters to be killed.

Egyptians protesting against the appointment of Ganzouri clashed with police firing tear gas in central Cairo on Saturday. The Interior Ministry said a protester was killed by accident, an account backed by Ahmad Zeidan, 18, an activist at the sit-in who said he had seen the youth being run over.

Texas Beat Texas A&M 27-25 In College Football Thriller

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Texas spoiled Texas A&M's going away party.

Justin Tucker kicked a 40-yard field goal as time expired to give the Longhorns a 27-25 victory over Texas A&M on Thursday night in the likely end of a more than century-old rivalry.

Texas A&M's last Big 12 game and the 118th meeting between these bitter rivals before the Aggies depart for the Southeastern Conference next season was a thriller befitting one of college football's oldest and most storied matchups.

The Aggies were down 24-19 before Ryan Tannehill found Jeff Fuller on a 16-yard touchdown pass with 1:48 remaining. But the 2-point conversion failed, leaving A&M (6-6, 4-5 Big 12) ahead 25-24.

The Longhorns' winning drive was helped by a 15-yard personal foul penalty and a 25-yard run by quarterback Case McCoy.

McCoy started Thursday after being benched after a loss to Oklahoma in favor of David Ash.

McCoy struggled to move the offense for much of the game, but he was able to do just enough to get the Longhorns in position for Tucker's winner.

Texas players spilled onto the field as soon as the kick sailed through the uprights. At the same time, thousands of dejected Aggies fans streamed to the exits in the end of this holiday tradition in this football-crazy state.

Receiver Jaxon Shipley threw a touchdown pass on a trick play in the first half and the Longhorns took advantage of two interceptions in a 17-point third quarter to send the Aggies off with a loss.

Carrington Byndom's interception return for a touchdown early in the third quarter cut Texas A&M's lead to 16-14.

The Longhorns (7-4, 4-4) took a 17-14 lead on a 23-yard field goal later in the third.

Tannehill's third interception led to a 1-yard touchdown run by Cody Johnson to extend the Longhorns' lead to 24-16

At times the end of this bitter rivalry felt like a goodbye between longtime friends. The Longhorn band spelled out `Thanks A&M' while playing "Thanks for the Memories." Earl Campbell, who the Heisman Trophy at Texas in 1977, and Texas A&M's John David Crow, winner of the award in 1957, watched the game sitting side by side in golf cart in the corner of the stadium.

Texas A&M's collie mascot, Reveille, didn't share in the goodwill. She showed her dislike for the Longhorns by chewing on a small stuffed version of Bevo, the Texas mascot during the game.

Texas A&M's official fight song bids adieu to the Longhorns with the line "so long to the orange and white." But the Aggies didn't really want to say goodbye.

They'd hoped to continue the game, which began in 1894 and has been played every year since 1915, but the Longhorns said their schedule is full through 2018.

Countless great players and games have populated this series. Former Texas A&M coach Paul "Bear" Bryant's 1954 team, which survived his grueling camp in Junction, Texas, played the Longhorns. Crow, A&M's only Heisman winner, was a member of the first Aggie team to beat Texas at Memorial Stadium in 1956. It was against the Aggies in 1998 that the Longhorns' Ricky Williams broke the Division I-A career rushing record in a 26-24 win.

Campbell had the best game of his Texas career against the Aggies when he ran for 222 yards and three touchdowns, and scored on a 60-yard pass in a 57-28 win by the Longhorns in 1977.

Fans were welcomed to the game with a prerecorded message on the Jumbotron by former Texas A&M defensive end/linebacker Von Miller. The crowd roared as Miller, the second overall pick in this year's draft, encouraged the Aggies to win.

On Thursday, Ben Malena caught his first career pass for a 7-yard touchdown on A&M first drive to make it 7-0. He was filling in for A&M's 1,000-yard rusher Cyrus Gray, who missed the game with a stress fracture in his left shoulder.

Randy Bullock pushed A&M's lead to 10-0 later in the first quarter with a 49-yard field goal.

The Longhorns couldn't get anything going on offense early and didn't get a first down until the last play of the first quarter.

Texas A&M was up 13-0 after another field goal in the second quarter before Texas used a trick play where Shipley threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Blaine Irby to cut the lead to six.

Shipley returned after missing the last three games with a knee injury.

Another field goal by Bullock left A&M up 16-7 at halftime.

Tannehill was 20 of 49 for 224 yards and Fuller had a season-high seven receptions for 107 yards.

The Longhorns' normally potent running game didn't do much with Malcolm Brown leading the group with 17 carries for 39 yards.

'Idol' producer: No major changes for new season (AP)

NEW YORK ? "American Idol" executive producer Nigel Lythgoe (NY'-juhl LIHTH'-goh) says don't expect any major changes when the hit Fox TV show returns in January.

Lythgoe returned as "Idol's" executive producer last season to usher in the post-Simon Cowell era with new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez and a new mentor for contestants, veteran music producer Jimmy Iovine. He says all of them are back for the new season.

Lythgoe says he's "not sure" the show wants to make too many more tweaks this year.

Lythgoe says the most significant change introduced last year was to allow the contestants to sing in their own styles rather than force them to perform styles unsuited for them. He says that opened the door for last season's winner, teenage country singer Scotty McCreery.

Weinstein desires to become recognized film brand

(AP) ? While Harvey Weinstein has no plans to roar like the MGM lion before each of his movies, the Oscar-winning producer wants to turn the film studio bearing his family's name into a recognizable brand. His wish list includes branding on par with Facebook's F, Twitter's T and Apple's, well, apple.

While he says he will continue to use the "the black and white logo that looks like it's from high school in 1954," he's letting his films this week do the talking ? or at least one of them.

Already in theaters is "My Week with Marilyn," starring two-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe. It's based on the writings of Colin Clark, who spent a week with the iconic actress in 1957 while she was filming "The Prince and the Showgirl" in the United Kingdom.

Weinstein, who heads The Weinstein Co. with his brother, explained the subject matter's appeal to him.

"I wanted to be that 23-year old boy and spend a week with Marilyn Monroe and go skinny-dipping," Weinstein said Wednesday. "Haven't we all dreamed of being with someone that gorgeous?"

But this is not another Monroe biopic. Weinstein calls it "a snapshot movie about one episode in her life." He equates the film's tone with his 2010 Oscar winner for best picture, "The King's Speech," about a speech therapist who helps King George VI.

With production credits in such Broadway hits as "Billy Elliot," ''The Producers" and "God of Carnage," Weinstein always has his eyes on Broadway. He admits it's a dream to bring "My Week with Marilyn" to the great stage in "five to 10 years." And when that happens, he has his heart set on seeing Monroe played by singer Katy Perry, whom he met while taking his daughters to the annual Jingle Ball concert at Madison Square Garden last year.

"I think Katy would be perfect to play Marilyn Monroe," Weinstein said, adding: "She would knock it out of the universe."

Weinstein's other new film, "The Artist," which comes out Friday, is a modern homage to the silent film era and was the darling of the Cannes and Toronto International film festivals. It was shot in black and white using the original 4:3 aspect ratio.

While the film is not your typical studio release, Weinstein doesn't concern himself with such things.

"With a script or a book I try to do what would appeal to me," he says proudly. "I'm not here to do the mainstream movies."

And the results are promising. Weinstein likes the buzz both films are getting, but his source isn't what you'd expect: It's the RottenTomatoes.com website, which compiles reviews and assigns percentage scores based on the average.

"I just go to Rotten Tomatoes to check on who's writing, and I read some of the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes," he said. "I like the site. It's fun. I like the interviews on the site."

Weinstein was proud to report Wednesday the Monroe film was at 85 percent. And "The Artist" was trending a bit higher, based on reviews going back to April, when it played at Cannes.

"I wish I could brand the movies in a way so they would just look at the page and trust me rather than a critic or anything else," Weinstein said.

Weinstein has been seeking advice from firms like Christian Dior and Louis Vuitton about how consumers recognize their products. Oddly enough, he's not expecting to recreate that Columbia Pictures lady with the torch. The iconic Leo the Lion has become synonymous with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Weinstein says that while the lion is a powerful symbol, he's not seeking that type of message. Nor is he shy about the brand.

"The thing about MGM and why it doesn't work at the end of the day is because they would make great musicals and then they would make Andy Hardy movies, or they would make Tarzan movies, so you never know what you got at MGM.

"I'm pretty consistent, at least on my side of the fence, with making a certain, you know, they call it artistic, it's really not, but something that is just a little more literary in its approach."

NBA players move legal fight to Minnesota (AP)

NEW YORK ? After filing two separate antitrust lawsuits against the league in two different states, NBA players are consolidating their efforts and have turned to the courts in Minnesota as their chosen venue.

A group of named plaintiffs including Carmelo Anthony, Steve Nash, Kevin Durant and Chauncey Billups filed an amended federal lawsuit against the league in Minnesota on Monday, hoping the courts there will be as favorable to them as they have been to NFL players in the past.

The locked-out players filed class-action antitrust suits against the league last Tuesday in California and Minnesota. But the California complaint was withdrawn Monday. Players' lawyer David Boies said he believes the combined case will move more quickly in Minnesota.

"The docket is less congested and they have a good track record of handling cases like this," Boies said.

Federal court in Minnesota was the venue for all NFL labor disputes that reached the courts for the past two decades. The NFL players enjoyed several victories over the owners there, most recently when U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson issued a temporary injunction this summer that the lifted the NFL's owner-imposed lockout. That decision was stayed and eventually overturned on appeal by the 8th Circuit in St. Louis.

NBA owners locked out the players July 1 and the labor strife between the two sides has forced games to be canceled through Dec. 15.

"We assume that Mr. Boies was not happy with either the reassignment of the case from Oakland to San Francisco or the fact that the new judge scheduled the first conference for March 2012," said Rick Buchanan, NBA executive vice president and general counsel. "This is consistent with Mr Boies' inappropriate shopping for a forum that he can only hope will be friendlier to his baseless legal claims."

The players have offered nearly $3 billion in concessions by essentially agreeing to a 50-50 split of basketball-related income, but after being unable to reach an accord on certain system issues, the players disbanded the union last week. That set the stage for the increasingly bitter labor dispute to move from the negotiating table to the courtroom, which could jeopardize the entire 2011-12 season.

Disbanding the union allowed the players to file an antitrust lawsuit against the league, a move the NFL players used as well. Rajon Rondo, Caron Butler, Baron Davis, Ben Gordon, Kawhi Leonard, Leon Powe, Anthony Randolph, Sebastian Telfair, Anthony Tolliver and Derrick Williams are the other named plaintiffs in the Minnesota lawsuit.

"Although the NBPA made concession after concession, including concessions that would cost its members more than one billion dollars over a six-year period, the NBA essentially refused to negotiate its basic 2007 demands, refusing to back off its demand for large salary reductions and harsh player restraints," the lawsuit alleged.

Boies said consolidating the two lawsuits saves the players weeks of court time that would have otherwise been devoted to deciding a venue.

"If we had not done it, at some point, the courts would have done it," Boies said.

And with the first month and a half of the season already canceled, time is of the essence.

The owners have already filed a lawsuit of their own in the Southern District of New York, a venue that has issued several NBA-friendly rulings over the years. The owners could file a motion to have the Minnesota case moved to New York because of that.

Vote set on controversial SAfrica secrets bill (AP)

JOHANNESBURG ? South Africa's parliament prepared Monday for a vote the following day on a state secrets bill that critics within and outside the governing party said would smother freedom of expression and make it harder to fight corruption.

The African National Congress, which holds a majority of parliament's seats, sponsored the bill, making it likely it would become law.

The ANC said South Africa needs to update apartheid-era legislation defining state secrets and imposing penalties for their disclosure. The party bristles at suggestions from critics that its proposal would take the country back to the days of white rule, when the government banned newspapers and punished whistle blowers to stifle criticism of its policies.

An umbrella organization of rights and development activists, historians and legal experts said in a statement last week that the bill could erode "the right to information in South Africa without justification."

In June, the ANC backed down on some of its original proposals, responding to months of criticism from newspaper editors, prominent writers led by Nobel laureate Nadime Gordimer, church groups, freedom of expression lobbyists, business leaders and others. Prominent ANC members also have opposed the bill, among them a former state security minister.

The changes included removing mandatory prison sentences for possessing and publishing secrets ? though reporters and others could still be jailed for publishing information that officials want kept secret. The ANC also agreed to limit the power to classify secrets to state security agencies, and proposed that an independent official ? a retired judge ? review appeals of state security rulings on classified information.

While those amendments were welcomed, the National Press Club was among those calling for more concessions, including a provision allowing those who break the law to avoid going to jail if they could argue they acted in the public interest.

In a speech to parliament last week, State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele said the public interest defense could not be accomodated. Cwele, whose ministry is sponsoring the bill, said that once secrets were out, the harm was done, even if a judge later ruled the public had no interest in their disclosure and the leaker was punished.

Cwele took a hard line, saying foreign spies were stealing information "at the expense of advancement of South Africa and her people," and even raising the possibility that demonstrators who have held peaceful marches to rally opposition to the bill were somehow being used by South Africa's enemies.

Critics like the Congress of South African Trade Unions, an influential labor group that traditionally supports the ANC, say even the amended bill puts too much power in the hands of government.

In a recent statement, the labor group said it was concerned the bill could make criminals of "individuals who disclose information in the public interest."

The secrets bill is separate from another ANC proposal that has raised concerns ? the possible creation of a tribunal that could discipline journalists, with powers to punish that have not yet been spelled out.

Activists fear the recent moves in South Africa ? known for one of the continent's freest and most open constitutions ? could influence other countries in the region.

Relations between the ANC and the media long have been tense. Last week, one of the country's most prominent newspapers, the Mail & Guardian, said it had been unable to publish details about corruption allegations against Mac Maharaj, a longtime ANC leader who recently took on the job of presidential spokesman, because of threats of criminal prosecution. Maharaj later announced he was asking police to investigate whether the paper and its journalists had broken the law in their reporting.

Electronic contact lens displays pixels on the eyes

Paul Marks, senior technology correspondent

Rabbit's-eye.jpg(Image: Institute of Physics)

The future of augmented-reality technology is here - as long as you're a rabbit. Bioengineers have placed the first contact lenses containing electronic displays into the eyes of rabbits as a first step on the way to proving they are safe for humans. The bunnies suffered no ill effects, the researchers say. ??

The first version may only have one pixel, but higher resolution lens displays - like those seen in Terminator - could one day be used as satnav enhancers showing you directional arrows for example, or flash up texts and emails - perhaps even video. In the shorter term, the breakthrough also means people suffering from conditions like diabetes and glaucoma may find they have a novel way to monitor their conditions.

In February, New Scientist revealed the litany of research projects underway in the field of contact lens enhancement. While one company has fielded a contact lens technology using a surface-mounted strain gauge to assess glaucoma risk, none have built in a display, or the lenses needed for focused projection onto the retina - and then tested it in vivo. They have now.

"We have demonstrated the operation of a contact lens display powered by a remote radiofrequency transmitter in free space and on a live rabbit," says a US and Finnish team led by Babak Praviz of the University of Washington in Seattle.

"This verifies that antennas, radio chips, control circuitry, and micrometre-scale light sources can be integrated into a contact lens and operated on live eyes."

terminator1008879b.jpg I'll be back: Could electronic contact lenses give humans Terminator-like vision in the future? (Image: Solent News & Photo Agency/Rex Features)

The test lens was powered remotely using a 5-millimetre-long antenna printed on the lens to receive gigahertz-range radio-frequency energy from a transmitter placed ten centimetres from the rabbit's eye. To focus the light on the rabbit's retina, the contact lens itself was fabricated as a Fresnel lens - in which a series of concentric annular sections is used to generate the ultrashort focal length needed.

They found their lens LED glowed brightly up to a metre away from the radio source in free space, but needed to be 2 centimetres away when the lens was placed in a rabbit's eye and the wireless reception was affected by body fluids. All the 40-minute-long tests on live rabbits were performed under general anaesthetic and showed that the display worked well - and fluroescence tests showed no damage or abrasions to the rabbit's eyes after the lenses were removed.

While making a higher resolution display is next on their agenda, there are uses for this small one, say the researchers: "A display with a single controllable pixel could be used in gaming, training, or giving warnings to the hearing impaired."

"This is clearly way off in the future. But we're aware of the research that is ongoing in this field and we're watching the technology's potential for biosensing and drug delivery applications in particular," says a spokesperson for the British Contact Lens Association in London.

Penn St, Syracuse cases put other schools on guard

First Penn State. Now Syracuse. Concerned that allegations of child sex abuse in two big college sports programs could trigger more cases around the country, universities are urging employees to reread their school's reporting policies, while more closely scrutinizing the people who work in their athletic departments.

Those reminders were circulating even as news of the scandals kept unfolding.

On Friday, the NCAA notified Penn State it would investigate the school for lack of institutional control resulting from the child sex abuse allegations against Joe Paterno's former assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky. The evening before, Syracuse placed basketball coach Jim Boeheim's top assistant, Bernie Fine, on leave after old allegations resurfaced that he molested two former ballboys. Sandusky and Fine each have denied the accusations against them.

In his letter to Penn State, NCAA president Mark Emmert restated a message that schools have been receiving simply by watching the news.

"It is critical that each campus and the NCAA as an Association re-examine how we constrain or encourage behaviors that lift up young people rather than making them victims," Emmert wrote.

Earlier this week at Michigan, president Mary Sue Coleman wrote an open letter to the university community reminding people to call 911 or the police department if they see a crime in progress. "This is a chance to remind one another that a community's values are lived out in the actions of each of us as individuals," she wrote.

At St. John's, athletic director Chris Monasch said the incidents offered a good opportunity to emphasize to staffers "that if there is an issue that's inappropriate you have to deal with it immediately."

"A cover-up only makes it more severe," Monasch said. "Certainly, we do background checks on the people we hire for summer camps and those types of things. We're trying to take precautions, but I don't know how you can prepare for some of those things."

At North Carolina State, athletic director Debbie Yow asks athletes to anonymously complete a thorough survey that includes a question asking if an athletic staff member ever engaged in inappropriate contact.

"I think in this case it was something that was so new, a new type of allegation," Yow said. "You're used to someone saying players are gambling or there's alcohol abuse or there was a fight in the parking deck or any number of things like that ? an NCAA violation, extra benefits. The list is very long that we know about and we try to protect against. This was a new type of issue I don't believe that was on the radar of athletics administrators."

John Burness, the former longtime vice president of public affairs at Duke, said there could be a "safety in numbers," element for victims who keep details of their abuse quiet, but suddenly see a chance to seek justice.

"I'm not surprised, nor would I be surprised, if we saw people coming forward now to make allegations," Burness said. "Because it could be more comfortable to do so. That shouldn't be discouraged. It should be encouraged. At the same time, we have to realize that every allegation is not necessarily true."

At a couple of smaller schools where sports aren't as big a focus, leaders nevertheless used the latest episodes to put a sharper point on their reporting policies.

"We all need an immediate reality check," Southern Baptist Theological Seminary president R. Albert Mohler Jr., wrote in a letter first reported by The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Presidents and chancellors aren't the only ones getting involved. Earlier this week, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal issued an executive order requiring university employees to report sexual abuse or neglect to authorities within 24 hours of witnessing the offense.

New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland are among the other states where lawmakers are considering toughening their reporting standards.

Both Burness and Terry Hartle, senior vice-president at the American Council on Education, compared reaction to these scandals to what happened after the massacre at Virginia Tech, when schools went back and analyzed their preparedness for a major emergency.

"I do not see a crisis coming up," Hartle said. "I do think this will be an experience that will force all colleges and universities to reevaluate their policies and procedures with reporting and dealing with sexual misconduct."

A handful of athletic directors interviewed by The Associated Press said they have brought up the subject with their departments.

In his regular Sunday evening email to athletes, coaches and staff, Minnesota AD Joel Maturi asked everyone to pray for the victims but also reminded them of their responsibility to report any illegal, abusive or improper behavior they become aware of.

At Kentucky, spokesman DeWayne Peevy said: "We take a long look at everything as a staff, re-evaluate what we're doing."

"Some things you can't necessarily prevent, but you do everything you can to make sure there are no red flags and nothing shows up unexpectedly," Peevy said.

Same message at Utah, where athletic director Chris Hill reminded employees it's their responsibility to report any potential crime to the police. At Arizona, athletic director Greg Byrne's letter to staff included this straightforward advice: "The message is simple ? call the police ? call 911 ? if you witness criminal activity or if you believe you or anyone else is in danger." Wake Forest is holding its annual administrative retreat soon, and the topic of how it might handle such a problem is expected to come up.

Although running background checks on employees is standard procedure at almost every university, Burness said the news of the past weeks likely will send athletic directors back to the personnel files.

"That's a proper step for an institution to take," he said. "If you're aware of prior cases, you should probably brush up on what happened, what was found, what wasn't found and who the incident was reported to."
