Native Americans and Northern Europeans more closely related than previously thought

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2012) ? Using genetic analyses, scientists have discovered that Northern European populations -- including British, Scandinavians, French, and some Eastern Europeans -- descend from a mixture of two very different ancestral populations, and one of these populations is related to Native Americans. This discovery helps fill gaps in scientific understanding of both Native American and Northern European ancestry, while providing an explanation for some genetic similarities among what would otherwise seem to be very divergent groups.

This research was published in the November 2012 issue of the Genetics Society of America's journal Genetics.

According to Nick Patterson, first author of the report, "There is a genetic link between the paleolithic population of Europe and modern Native Americans. The evidence is that the population that crossed the Bering Strait from Siberia into the Americas more than 15,000 years ago was likely related to the ancient population of Europe."

To make this discovery, Patterson worked with Harvard Medical School Professor of Genetics David Reich and other colleagues to study DNA diversity, and found that one of these ancestral populations was the first farming population of Europe, whose DNA lives on today in relatively unmixed form in Sardinians and the people of the Basque Country, and in at least the Druze population in the Middle East. The other ancestral population is likely to have been the initial hunter-gathering population of Europe. These two populations were very different when they met. Today the hunter-gathering ancestral population of Europe appears to have its closest affinity to people in far Northeastern Siberia and Native Americans.

The statistical tools for analyzing population mixture were developed by Patterson and presented in a systematic way in the report. These tools are the same ones used in previous discoveries showing that Indian populations are admixed between two highly diverged ancestral populations and showing that Neanderthals contributed one to four percent of the ancestry of present-day Europeans. In addition, the paper releases a major new dataset that characterizes genetic diversity in 934 samples from 53 diverse worldwide populations.

"The human genome holds numerous secrets. Not only does it unlock important clues to cure human disease, it also reveal clues to our prehistoric past," said Mark Johnston, Editor-in-Chief of the journal GENETICS. "This relationship between humans separated by the Atlantic Ocean reveals surprising features of the migration patterns of our ancestors, and reinforces the truth that all humans are closely related."

How, in the animal world, a daughter avoids mating with her father: Paternal 'voice' recognition

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2012) ? Paternal recognition -- being able to identify males from your father's line -- is important for the avoidance of inbreeding, and one way that mammals can do this is through recognizing the calls of paternal kin. This was thought to occur only in large-brained animals with complex social groups, but a new study published November 30 in the open access journal BMC Ecology provides evidence in a tiny, solitary primate that challenges this theory.

The study, led by Sharon E Kessler, finds that the grey mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus) -- a small-brained, solitary foraging mammal endemic to Madagascar -- is able to recognize paternal relatives via vocalizations, thus providing evidence that this is not dependent upon having a large brain and a high social complexity, as previously suggested.

Because grey mouse lemurs are nocturnal solitary-foragers living in dense forests, vocal communication is important for regulating social interactions across distances where visibility is poor and communication via smell is limited. Though the mouse lemur shares sleeping sites with other mouse lemurs, it forages alone for fruit and insects. It is a particularly interesting species with which to study vocal paternal recognition because, in the wild, females remain in the same area of birth and cooperatively raise young with other female kin. Males do not co-nest with their mates or young and provide no paternal care, which limits opportunities for familiarity-based social interactions. Thus, vocalizations are likely to be important -- particularly for avoiding inbreeding.

The research team from Arizona State University and the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover in Germany found that two of the most frequent calls of the mouse lemur were the mate advertisement call and the alarm call. Using multi-parametric analyses of the call's acoustic parameters, they could see that both call types contained individual signatures. Through this, they discovered that only male grey mouse lemur advertisement calls, but not alarm calls, contained acoustic paternal signatures. Furthermore, females paid more attention to advertisement calls from unrelated males than from their fathers.

The findings from the study suggest that the discrimination between mate advertisement calls and alarm calls may be an important mechanism for inbreeding avoidance. This is likely to be highly important in the grey mouse lemur species because males are likely to remain in an area for several years and they can expand their ranges to more than twice that of the female's range, making it likely that adult males' ranges will overlap with those of their daughters from previous mating seasons.

The team also proposed that the mouse lemur's ultrasonic calls above the hearing range of owls could be an anti-predator strategy, especially since the species suffers from high predation.

Lead author Kessler commented, "Given that more complex forms of sociality with cohesive foraging groups are thought to have evolved from an ancestral solitary forager much like the mouse lemur, this suggests that the mechanisms for kin recognition like those seen here may be the foundation from which more complex forms of kin-based sociality evolved."

She continued, "Future analyses will determine which acoustic parameters make this kin recognition possible by artificially manipulating acoustic parameters in the calls and then using the modified calls in playback experiments."

Card firms' block on WikiLeaks did not break rules: EU

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A block on processing donations for WikiLeaks by Visa Europe and other credit card companies is unlikely to have violated EU anti-trust rules, the European Commission said on Tuesday.

DataCell, a company that collected donations for WikiLeaks, complained to the Commission about Visa Europe, MasterCard Europe and American Express Co after they stopped processing donations for WikiLeaks in December 2010. Their decisions followed criticism by the United States of WikiLeaks' release of thousands of sensitive U.S. diplomatic cables.

"On the basis of the information available, the Commission considers that the complaint does not merit further investigation because it is unlikely that any infringement of EU competition rules could be established," said a spokesman for the Commission, the EU executive.

He added, however, that the Commission would look at new information from DataCell before taking a final decision.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been staying in Ecuador's embassy in central London since June to avoid extradition to Sweden to face rape and sexual assault allegations.

Assange said there were no lawful grounds for the card companies' actions, which he said had cost Wikileaks 95 percent of its revenue and threatened his organization's existence.

In-Laws And Marriage Study: Son-In-Law Key To Lasting Marriage

The holiday season usually means more quality time with the in-laws, and according to recent research, it's imperative that everyone get along.

A 26-year longitudinal study found that when a husband reported having a close relationship with his wife's parents, the couple's risk of divorce decreased by 20 percent. Conversely, when a wife reported having a close relationship with her husband's parents, the couple's risk of divorce increased by 20 percent.

Terri Orbuch, psychologist and research professor at the University of Michigan, began the study in 1986 with 373 couples in their first year of marriage, and followed up with them over time. She told the Wall Street Journal that she believes the findings are due to the different ways husbands and wives approach their relationships with their in-laws.

"Women value a close relationship with their in-laws but may ultimately view them as meddling, while men are more interested in providing for their families, and take their in-laws' actions less personally," Orbuch said. "Because relationships are so important to women, their identity as a wife and mother is central to their being. They interpret what their in-laws say and do as interference into their identity as a spouse and parent."

Wives also pay close attention to their own parents' relationships with their husbands. In the video above, Wall Street Journal columnist Elizabeth Bernstein suggests that when a husband makes an effort to get along with his wife's parents, his wife feels taken care of, too.

"He has forged a relationship with them, and that reads to his wife as if, boy, he cares about me if he's going to bother with my parents. If he's going to take care of my parents, he's going to get to know my parents, [then] he really cares about me," Bernstein said.

Orbuch advises parents of sons to be mindful of behavior their daughter-in-law may interpret as "meddling," while parents of daughters should be open to bonding with their sons-in-law. Wives should maintain boundaries with their in-laws, and husbands should remember to take care of their in-laws and treat them as important.

Watch the video above for more on the study's findings.

Business Security Tips for the Holidays - Business Review USA

In the run up to Christmas, businesses need to ensure that they have checked their list twice when it comes to IT security. Not only do employees browse for Christmas gifts online during their lunch breaks, but an increasing number of people work remotely over the festive period. Employees can unknowingly put their business at risk from the inside by inadvertently opening the door to a virus or spyware, which can have devastating consequences to a business and its customers.

1. ? ?Shop around

Whatever the size of your business; you don?t have to plunder the Christmas party fund to afford proper protection during the festive season. Smaller businesses can be an easy target because they are less likely to invest in the most expensive corporate solutions. However, there are plenty of cost effective options to be had for the savvy shopper. Look for reputable antivirus, anti-spyware and anti-spam packages that will block hackers when installed across all corporate devices. Of course, the best and most cost effective option is to have security built into your network if you want to stop cyber-attacks at the source.

?

?

2. ? ?Consider the cloud

Father Christmas isn?t the only one who can travel around the world at the speed of light. The cloud has made storing data and accessing Apps from anywhere much easier. Partnering with a cloud provider whose service is optimised for high security standards can strengthen the safety net around your data. However, make sure you take control of your data in the cloud by choosing a trusted provider who is open with you about where your data is held and how this may change. Ensure that you can decide where your data is stored and how it is moved, and choose a provider who will offer you a robust SLA and has a proven track record.

?

?

3. ? ?Education is the perfect gift

Enforce a thorough internet security policy for employees that covers threat management across PC, mobile and social media activity. It is imperative that employees understand the risk that cybercrime poses and the costly consequences of a breach during the Christmas period, in order to motivate adherence to the guidelines you provide.?

?

?

4. ? ?Take responsibility

It may sound simple, but ensure that someone within your organisation is taking responsibility for monitoring the current security threats. Patching software and making staff aware of the latest scams will ensure that full protection is maintained and no chinks in your security armour go unnoticed.

?

5. ? ?Stay one step ahead of BYOD

Whilst, of course, it is essential to implement adequate protection at the business edge, it is equally important to ensure that employees aren?t unwittingly putting the business at risk. Research earlier this year revealed that nearly one in two small businesses have experienced a security breach caused by staff. With the growing popularity of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), employees intending to take new gadgets from their Christmas stockings into the corporate environment need guidance on how to do this without compromising business security. ? ? ?

?

6. ? ?Protection for remote workers?

The same security rules apply for all employees, whatever their working environment this Christmas. Make sure you take the necessary precautions to protect staff that are accessing the corporate network and applications outside the office. Working smarter and more securely on the move requires the likes of endpoint protection, along with a closely maintained corporate data usage policy.?

Industrial Computers: Why Are They Being Used for Programming ...

Posted Today, 03:10 PM

Codecall admin: This article (provided by Dell) is intended to provide you with information on products and services that we consider useful and of value to developers.

For several years now, the term ?industrial computers? has referred almost exclusively to computer that were meant to be used in harsh environments. Their programming features were behind the times?sometimes nonexistent. These computers had no moving parts and the components needed to be small, compact and efficient, with the ability to run productively for several years.??The graphics on industrial computers were only adequate and the hardware was often multiple years out of date.
This could be incredibly frustrating when trying to keep up with the latest technology. However, recently some changes have been made to industrial computers to combat these issues. Industrial computers are now made to keep up with the latest advances, including in software development, and still maintain performance of their key functions.

Customizable Programs

The industrial computers of today are generally used for data collection or to operate equipment. Because of this, the modern industrial computers have been made to be high adaptable for programming needs. These computers can now run programs from software developers or be customized with a unique program made specifically for its task to be preformed. These computers now come with more programmable features and software such as terminal emulation and even advanced image processing.
??
??Design

Traditional industrial computers are made to withstand several elements that traditionally would kill a personal computer. This includes designs that can cope with and withstand grease, water, ice and extreme heat, dust and even getting beat up and thrown around a little. This is what makes an industrial computer, but the programming issues have made them outdated and underrated. To battle this image of industrial computers, several new design elements have been released that do all the key things an industrial computer needed to do before, but also look good while doing it.
Modern industrial computers have been manufactured to be far less expensive than traditional industrial computers and can now be made with almost any type of material, including food-grade stainless steel. Stainless steel can withstand all the dust and heavy temperatures that an industrial computer may experience but reduce the cost of the computer and provide efficient computers for programming.
??
??Working with Embedded Systems

Another programmable and design aspect of modern industrial computers is their ability to function with embedded systems. This feature is essential in factories or other environments that rely on industrial computers to interact with their equipment. In this way, industrial computers are able to work more efficiently, in terms of both productivity cost and actual usage.??For even more information on how embedded systems read this.
??
??Industrial Computers

Modern industrial computers use all the positive elements and aspects of traditional industrial computers and provide a way to make these computers programmable and efficient through design and embedded parts. And it is because of these new developments and technologies being applied that industrial computers are now used consistently for programming purposes.??To read more on industrial computers??click here.

(AP) ? At least 112 people were killed in a fire that raced through a multi-story garment factory just outside of Bangladesh's capital, an official said Sunday.

The blaze broke out at the seven-story factory operated by Tazreen Fashions late Saturday. By Sunday morning, firefighters had recovered 100 bodies, fire department Operations Director Maj. Mohammad Mahbub told The Associated Press.

He said another 12 people who had suffered injuries after jumping from the building to escape the fire later died at hospitals. The death toll could rise as the search for victims was continuing, he said.

Local media reported that up to 124 people were killed in the fire. The cause of the blaze was not immediately clear, and authorities have ordered an investigation.

Bangladesh has some 4,000 garment factories, many without proper safety measures. The country annually earns about $20 billion from exports of garment products, mainly to the United States and Europe.

Relatives of the factory workers were frantically looking for their loved ones. Sabina Yasmine said she saw the body of her daughter-in-law, who died in the fire, but had no trace of her son, who also worked at the factory.

"Oh, Allah, where's my soul? Where's my son?" wailed Yasmine, who works at another factory in the area. "I want the factory owner to be hanged. For him, many have died, many have gone."

Mahbub said firefighters recovered 69 bodies from the second floor of the factory alone. He said most of the victims had been trapped inside the factory, located just outside of Dhaka, with no emergency exits leading outside the building.

Many workers who had taken shelter on the roof of the factory were rescued, but firefighters were unable to save those who were trapped inside, Mahbub said.

He said the fire broke out on the ground floor, which was used as a warehouse, and spread quickly to the upper floors.

"The factory had three staircases, and all of them were down through the ground floor," Mahbub said. "So the workers could not come out when the fire engulfed the building."

"Had there been at least one emergency exit through outside the factory, the casualties would have been much lower," he said.

Many of the victims were burned beyond recognition. The recovered bodies were kept in rows on the premise of a nearby school.

Army soldiers and paramilitary border guards were deployed to help police keep the situation under control as thousands of onlookers and anxious relatives of the factory workers gathered at the scene, Mahbub said. He would not say how many people were still missing.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed shock at the loss of so many lives in the blaze and asked authorities to conduct thorough search-and-rescue operations.

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association said it would stand by the victims' families.

Bangladesh's garment factories make clothes for brands including Wal-Mart, JC Penney, H&M, Marks & Spencer, Carrefour and Tesco.

Separately, a flyover under construction fell onto a busy market, leaving at least 14 people dead including three construction workers in southeastern city of Chittagong, an official said Sunday.

Local fire official Abdul Mannan said the concrete structure collapsed on Saturday night, and authorities recovered the bodies by Sunday morning from under the debris in the second-largest city after Dhaka.

Dr. Mark - Question Reference Femoral Anteversion - Health ...

Dr. Mark?I am directing this question to you because you were so instrumental in my wife and I finally getting my daughter?s issue of excessive femoral anteversion addressed.??Prior to her surgery, Kellie, who is 14, had been experiencing continuous knee and ankle pain with sports activities.??The pain really didn?t begin until she went through puberty around 12 years old and then it just progressively got worse from there.??She walked VERY pigeon toed as her hips rotated internally 80 degrees when walking and 15 degrees externally.??She also experienced significant ankle pain, mainly in the right ankle, with sports but it would always get better with rest.??We finally took her to Sinai Hospital in Baltimore to the International Limb Lengthening Center to be examined by a doctor familiar and very experienced in femoral osteotomies on kids.?? After meeting with him, Kellie was extremely confident and wanted ?them fixed? as she said.??She had surgery in June of this past summer.??The surgery was about 5 ? hours total.??She had bilateral de-rotational proximal femoral osteotomies with femoral rods and screws implanted as fixation.??Kellie based her excitement for the surgery on the hope of being pain free in her knees and ankles and on the estimated goals of being on the beach in August, skiing in December, and returning to softball workouts in January.??She wa sin the hospital for 6 days and then returned home.??She was able to stand and transfer only to the bedside toilet for about 2 weeks, and then her pain dramatically subsided and she began to move around more without pain, although remaining non-weight bearing except for transfer to toilet or shower seat.??At the 7 week mark we saw the doctor who advised, by Xray that the bones were healed and that she could begin using the walker or crutches and transition to full weight bearing as soon as she felt ok to do so.??She had also, by the way, been going to therapy at Sinai since her return home from the hospital, starting with pool therapy and continuing to land based therapy.??3 Days after the 7 week checkup, we went to the beach.??Kellie was walking the beach and riding the waves a day later.??She was sore with more activity, as would be expected, but also had a ?wobble? to her walk that was very pronounced.??The doctor advised that was due to the damage to the hip muscles in surgery and would take time to resolve.??He said she should be much better at 6 months and back to normal at 9 months.??In early September Kellie had the screws only removed as she was getting a painful ?catching? above both knees when walking or standing up.??The screw removal eliminated those symptoms.??Things progressed and she began complaining of right ankle pain almost constantly.??Her feet always turned dramatically in when walking and now they are straight when walking.??However, when I walk behind her, in addition to the wobble, it is easy to see why her ankles may hurt, especially her right ankle, as when she walks it appears as if her ankles are rolling inwards when fully weight bearing on each leg.??The right one is very noticeably worse than the left.??In addition, she has begun to complain of significant pain in her left hip/buttocks area.??Xrays reveal the left rod sticking up higher than the right one and the doctor has scheduled her for removal of the rods on January 4th, which will be almost 6 months to the day from her original surgery.
??I know that was a lot of background info just to get to my 2 questions, but here they are.??First, how long does it typically take this wobble to go away and does it always go away so she can return to her sports activities???Secondly, just asking typically or generally as I know you are not diagnosing anything etc. without seeing Kellie, is it possible the ankle issues are related to the way her foot progression was her whole in relation to the new neutral angle???In other words, is it possible her foot/ankle muscles are weak and not supporting her???When her ankles roll in with each step her knees seem to follow.??Is it possible the hip muscle weakness is the cause of the ankle issue???Or is it more likely to be a structural issue with the foot and ankle itself???We still have to make her an appointment with a foot/ankle specialist.??All of her knee pain and left ankle pain is gone post surgery.??Now we have to have the rods out and then deal with what the ankles issue is and get rid of the wobble before she can return to running and softball.??My wife and I feel so bad for her and want to do what?s best for her.??We are just trying to mentally get our heads around the fact that the wobble will go away and the ankle issue can be fixed.??She has gone through so much.
Obviously, we will be asking her doctor these questions also, but I have respected you immensely and you were so instrumental in us just not ignoring the rotational deformity that I felt I would try and ask you and hope you had time to answer.??Thanks so much for your time.

Ukranian News - Datagroup Launches Broadband Internet Access ...

Datagroup telecom company (Kyiv) in November has started providing a service of broadband internet access called InternetBOOM via up-to-date satellite technology operating in the Ka band on basis of the KA-SAT satellite for private users, Datagroup director-general Oleksandr Danchenko has announced in the press centre of Ukrainian News Agency.

"We are starting commercial sales of this service. At the moment in frames of commercial testing of this service users can get connected to the tariff package with the following characteristics: eight gigabytes of included traffic, receive rate up to eight megabits per second, send rate up to two megabits per second, after excess of the tariff limit the receive/send rate is one hundred and twenty-eight kilobits per second. Monthly fee for this tariff is three hundred and twenty-nine hryvnias. And in December we plan to introduce a full line of InternetBOOM tariffs," he said.

In his words, in October Datagroup started commercial service of broadband internet access via satellite technology in the Ka band on basis of the KA-SAT satellite.

The service was started jointly with the technical partner Eutelsat Communications (Paris, France).

KA-SAT is Eutelsat's newest satellite, launched in 2010, put into commercial operation in May 2011.

In Ukraine, opening of the Ka band for commercial use demanded addition on the plan of usage of Ukraine's radio-frequency resource, these changes were made by a Government Resolution.

Danchenko says the communications-satellite network on basis of the KA-SAT satellite was used in frames of a project of video surveillance at the ballot stations during the parliamentary election and secured its uninterrupted operation.

In particular, Datagroup installed 12,600 satellite communications stations across Ukraine.

The Ka band is a microwave wave-length frequency range used mainly for satellite radio communication and radiolocation.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the National Commission for State Regulation of Communications and Informatisation in late September issued a licence to Datagroup for using radio frequency resource for satellite radio communication (mobile satellite radio communication and fixed-line radio services) in all provinces.

Datagroup was created through the merger of several telecommunications companies in Kyiv and provinces.

World shares, euro rise on Greek hopes, German data

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Global stocks and the euro gained on Friday on signs of progress in talks on releasing aid to Greece and after an influential German survey found business sentiment had improved in Europe's largest economy.

U.S. stocks rose for a fifth day, getting a lift from bellwether technology shares such as Intel and Microsoft , both up about 2 percent. An index of semiconductor stocks <.sox> gained 1.8 percent, while the S&P information technology sector index rose 1.6 percent.

Trading on Wall Street ended early after markets were closed Thursday for the Thanksgiving holiday. With many investors still on holiday on Friday, volume was low. About 2.8 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the NYSE MKT, compared with the daily average for the year to date of 6.5 billion.

The light volume exacerbated moves, and shares of big-cap technology companies climbed as investors took advantage of the day's upward momentum to add to their positions.

"Anyone that was on the sidelines waiting for a pullback like the one we just had in some of the tech names, they're looking for any glimpse of strong price action for 'permission' to enter into those (stocks)," said Todd Salamone, director of research at Schaeffer's Investment Research in Cincinnati, Ohio

Microsoft helped lift the Nasdaq, gaining 2.8 percent to $27.70, while Apple Inc rose 1.7 percent to $571.50.

From mid-September to mid-November, the S&P tech sector shed about 13 percent as the broader market also dropped.

Research In Motion surged on optimism about its soon-to-be-launched BlackBerry 10 devices, which will vie against Apple's iPhone and Android-based smartphones. RIM was up 13.6 percent at $11.66.

Friday also marked the start of the holiday shopping season and gave investors a reason to scoop up retailers' shares on hopes that consumers will go out to spend en masse.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 172.79 points, or 1.35 percent, at 13,009.68. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 18.10 points, or 1.30 percent, at 1,409.13. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 40.30 points, or 1.38 percent, at 2,966.85.

For the week, the Dow was up 3.3 percent, the S&P 500 rose 3.6 percent, and the Nasdaq gained 4 percent.

European shares posted their best weekly gain so far this year after rising for a fifth day on Friday. The FTSEurofirst-300 index of pan-European shares rose 0.6 percent to end at 1,110.45.

Germany's BASF and Bayer led a rally in chemical stocks after a German business morale index surprised with its first increase in seven months, raising the prospect that Europe's largest economy can regain some momentum.

Also helping the market, confidence in the global economic outlook got a big boost from the HSBC flash Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index for China, which pointed to an expansion in activity after seven consecutive quarters of slowdown.

The Chinese data followed a report on Wednesday showing U.S. manufacturing grew in November at its quickest pace in five months, indicating strong economic growth in the fourth quarter.

The euro rose as high as $1.2943 on Reuters data, breaking above resistance at $1.2910, its 55-day moving average. It was last trading at $1.2941, up 0.5 percent on the day.

Against the yen, the euro also hit a seven-month high of 106.73 yen and was last at 106.65 yen, up 0.4 percent.

MSCI's world equity index was up 1.1 percent on Friday at 329.92 points. Earlier, MSCI's broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.7 percent for a weekly gain of 2.6 percent, also its best week for two months.

Optimism about a deal to help Greece, hopes that U.S. lawmakers can agree on a solution to avoid a fiscal crisis, and data showing an improving global economic outlook have driven a rally in riskier asset markets this week.

Greece said the International Monetary Fund had relaxed its debt-cutting target for the country, suggesting lenders were closer to a deal for a vital aid tranche to be paid. But other sources involved in the talks cautioned that the funding gap was far bigger than Greece suggested.

"While we wouldn't want to understate the challenges of reaching agreement on Greece, news reports have described some of the remaining obstacles as technical and legal, and thus the hurdles to a deal do not seem insurmountable," said Nick Bennenbroek, head of currency strategy at Wells Fargo in New York.

Euro-zone finance ministers, the IMF and the European Central Bank (ECB) failed earlier this week to agree on how to get the country's debt down to a sustainable level. They will make a third attempt at resolving the issue on Monday.

U.S. government debt prices mostly dipped on Friday in light post Thanksgiving holiday trading. Bonds' safe-haven allure faded as investors scooped up stocks.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was down 4/32, with the yield at 1.6917 percent.

GOLD AND OIL GAIN

In commodities, gold rose above $1,750 an ounce for the first time in more than a month on Friday, gaining 1.3 percent as dollar weakness and options-related buying triggered a technical breakout.

Oil rose above $111 a barrel on Friday as the better-than-expected German business sentiment data helped ease worries about demand in the euro-zone economies, boosting the euro against the dollar, while fresh protests broke out in Egypt and led to supply concerns.

Brent crude futures were up 85 cents at $111.40 a barrel at 1734 GMT. U.S. crude was up 92 cents at $88.32. The U.S. market, which was closed on Thursday for the Thanksgiving holiday, will not issue a formal settlement price until later Friday.

On Thursday, Israel began withdrawing its army, which had been poised to invade the Gaza Strip in pursuit of militants that had fired rockets into Israel.

Although the Gaza ceasefire is holding, violence has emerged in Egypt. In Cairo's Tahrir Square, thousands of people participated in demonstrations against President Mohamed Mursi. Police fired teargas into the crowd in an attempt to disburse it.

On patrol with a shark ranger in Indonesia

Conservation International works with Indonesian children to help them learn how to protect the most diverse underwater region in the world. ?NBC News' Richard Engel reports.

By Ed Flanagan, NBC News

RAJA AMPAT, Indonesia ? The remote Indonesian archipelago of Raja Ampat is home to an underwater treasure trove of coral reefs and tremendous biodiversity, miles away from polluted urban centers and human encroachment.

The faraway islands in Western Papua, regarded by many marine experts as having the potential to help restore the world's ailing coral reefs, are vulnerable to the unchecked exploitation of a lucrative treasure that is rapidly disappearing from Indonesia's waters: sharks.

China's growing appetite for the de rigueur shark fin soup has attracted fishermen from elsewhere in Indonesia and Southeast Asia to the waters around Raja Ampat's 1,500 islands.

Alarmed, conservationists and local villagers worked together to create the Misool Eco Resort and Conservation Center in 2005, establishing a 165-square-mile "No-Take Zone" that banned fishing.

When a neighboring village requested to take part, the area was expanded to 472 square miles, roughly the size of the city of Los Angeles.

The Misool team also recruited a group of rangers to help patrol the waters for illegal fishermen. Earlier this year, NBC News had an opportunity to go on patrol with Abdul Razak Tamher, 31, one of the first rangers.

Q: Before 2005, what were shark and fish stocks like in this area of Raja Ampat?

A: Before 2005, one of the main occupations of the people of my village was fishing. That's what we did every day and one of the big things fished were sharks. By the 2000s there were very few sharks left in the area, but in the 1980s and 90s when I was fishing there were lots of sharks. A lot of people used dynamite and potassium cyanide for fishing.

Q: So did villagers in Misool know they had to change the way things were done?

A: At that time, people here really didn't think much about shark or marine conservation. We didn't know shark fishing was illegal (prior to the formation of the No-Take Zone in 2005, the local governor had actually signed a law against shark fishing) because nobody from the government came out here to tell or educate us that it was illegal and bad for the ecology to fish sharks.

It was really through the efforts of the resort to educate the village about the importance of sharks and protecting the marine environment that we saw the importance of it and began to appreciate the natural beauty ourselves. Now if people from my village hear of a shark fishing boat coming into this area, they get really upset.

NBC News' Richard Engel talks to a Conservation International scientist as he identifies a new species of fish.

Q: Is conservation a completely foreign idea here? Isn't there a long tradition of seasonal fishing and spiritual beliefs around protecting certain animals?

A:?We've embraced principles of conservation since the beginning of our culture. They were simple ideas, but they still worked for us. For example, we would harvest clams from the ocean for six months, then depending on the ocean conditions, we would close that area for sometimes up to a year before harvesting again.

Many of the original families in this area are forbidden to eat different sea creatures like sharks or turtles or other kinds of fish. In each case, there is a reason why each family respects and protects a certain animal. It could be that a family member or fisherman generations ago was rescued by that species or guided to land at a time of need. Many still believe that if someone in the family breaks this taboo, they will get sick or something bad will happen.

Q:?In 2006, the rangers were formed with just five of you and a few of you were actually former shark fishermen. What made you make such a dramatic change in your life?

?A:?I personally wasn't involved in shark fishing, but other original rangers that were here in the beginning and their village elders were shark fishermen. Even though they were shark fishermen and lived off the harvest of the ocean, they realized that they needed to preserve this area and the marine life for future generations to come.

Many of us felt ? and still feel today ? that if we told our children or grandchildren that there were lots of fish and sharks in the sea around these islands and they went there and saw none they would think that we were liars and we just couldn't allow that to happen.

Q:?What was it like in the early days with the rangers?

A:?The rangers weren't really effective until 2009 because at that time there was only one speed boat that was always busy getting lumber for the construction of the resort. So we would only go out if we saw an illegal boat go past the resort. From 2006-2009, we went out almost every day. In the months of June and July, the area was choked with shark finning boats from as far away as Java that cast long lines with sometimes 1,000 or 2,000 hooks to catch sharks.

To expel the foreign boats, it wasn't a problem. We would just go up to the boats and tell them leave and they would go. Local fishermen were tougher. Most of the problems had to do with local fishermen not agreeing with the contract we signed with Misool Eco Reserve to create the no-take zones or claiming they were not around when the contract had been reached. They would also say we have it easy since we work as rangers and make a lot of money, so we don't need to fish like they did.

Q:?How soon after the reserve formed did you start to see results from the sanctuary?

A:?After two or three years, I started to see a lot of sharks in the lagoons and my friends who went diving began to see more fish. There were just some researchers here in Misool who were shocked by the amount of fish who were in the protected areas. The results have just been amazing.

Q:?How have the villages in the area adapted to the sanctuary?

A:?In the beginning, there were a lot of problems with the villagers not understanding the rangers' mission. The most important thing we did to get people behind us was to use Adat, or traditional Papuan village law. This was done by developing a close relationship with the ancestral village head, as he holds the power of the village and so people will listen to what he says. If we didn't have the village head, then it would have been difficult to enforce the rules of the sanctuary.

Q:?What's next for the rangers in the coming years?

A:?We all hope the ranger patrol can continue forever and that we have the resources to keep recruiting young people from the villages to the patrol. We now have three ranger stations built and we hope to have three rangers in every station with small, fuel-efficient boats that can be used to spot illegal fishermen and intercept them until support can show up.

The other big problem we'd like to fix is communication. Radio communication in this region of Raja Ampat is difficult because all the radios we have now are line-of-sight and the islands interfere with signal within short distances. The plan is to build a main radio/repeater station that will cover the entire area so that there is clear contact throughout the sanctuary.
