If I uninstall v6.01 and reinstall v5.51, it works again. Reverse the
process and
it doesn't work without --unprivilged and even then, as I said, it works
much
slower.
It wouldn't hurt to send the output from --iflist (inline is fine), but I wouldn't be surprised if this is caused by some of the interface/route issues that are affecting a number of other people. It appeared to work fine up until 5.51 (I think 5.51SVN-dnet-pcap2 in March 2011 was fine too), but I think the introduction of IPv6 support with 5.52 has broken something. For some reason my Nmap 6 thinks that all routes should use eth2, even for hosts on the local subnet for eth1. Djalal was looking into fixing this on Linux, but his patch seems to break the routes completely on Windows (to be fair, I wasn't expecting this to work as he did say it wouldn't). You might be able to get Nmap 6 to work correctly by forcing it to use the correct interface (e.g. "-e eth1"), assuming this is a routing issue and not some other issue - if forcing the interface works, do let us know! Using --unprivileged will force Nmap to use the OS to send it (instead of using WinPcap), and Windows will know the correct interface and route to use, which is probably why it works.
Using -e <interface> works a treat. I assume then that this is your known problem. Thanks for the help.
I think this problem is fixed in r29889 and will be fixed in the next release. http://seclists.org/nmap-dev/2012/q3/1037 David Fifield _______________________________________________ Sent through the nmap-dev mailing list http://cgi.insecure.org/mailman/listinfo/nmap-dev Archived at http://seclists.org/nmap-dev/

Web Marketing Ideas To Build Your Business Or Brand ...

It can be hard to do website marketing if you?re just beginning, especially when there is so much competition in your field. The best way to use Internet promotion is by using many techniques. This article will help you get started!

TIP! Be sure to provide an ordering system that is secure. Make sure that you are using a safe website when placing any type of money transaction option on your website.

Advertising is necessary to sell anything, whether online or not. Although the up-front expenses can be high, the traffic and leads that ads generate make the investment worthwhile. Advertising can give you access to customers you might not find in any other manner.

The best part of a solid marketing strategy is having solid content. Your content should be checked frequently to ensure that its quality remains high and that the message it sends to customers is consistent. In addition, make sure that someone looks over your content. A fresh perspective is extremely valuable. Finally, you must be sure that you run a spelling and grammar check on your content to ensure everything is correct.

TIP! You should invest time to learn how to design websites. There is a wealth of information about HTML and CSS online, or you could check out a book at the local library.

Offer customized versions of your website to people in other countries. You can do this by implementing a version of your site in several different languages. This will result in a larger, global audience. Customers will be far more likely to purchase your products and services if you offer the information in their own languages.

Look at Internet promotion as something fun and not something that is a job or big chore. Do this for fun until the time comes when you know you can actually make a career out of it.

TIP! Attach a human face to the brand. Use your real name in your ads and post a picture of yourself on your website.

With any kind of marketing, you are going to run into setbacks. The best thing to do is deal with them and keep on going. Since you never know how close you are to success, giving up can cause you to miss out on your marketing goals. When you are planning a product or service launch, you must make sure you have done all your research. This may require a significant initial work investment. Keep your focus on your end result and realize that your hard work will pay off.

Try placing banners where they don?t look like banners. If they appear as clickable links, your customers will be more apt to use them. Many people won?t click banners if they look like banners, so this can entice them.

TIP! Provide a safe and secure ordering and payment process for your Internet business that is easy for your customers to understand. People are hesitant to send out personal information via the internet so do your best to assure them that your site is secure.

A great way to increase traffic to your site is to offer a free course. This is a powerful strategy that allows to to combine one of your products with the instruction and increase the chances that the visitor to your site will make a purchase. You can also run a contest that allows the participant to win something of added value.

It?s imperative that Internet marketing is handled in an organized fashion. You can make the most of your business by setting everything up the best you can. Make use of the advice you have read here to see an increase in traffic, and more importantly, in sales

Panetta says Syria moved some chemical weapons

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says intelligence suggests the Syrian government has moved some of its chemical weapons, but the U.S. believes that the main sites still remain secure.

Panetta says he does not have enough information to confirm if any of the moves suggest that some of the material has been acquired by the opposition forces battling the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

It is widely believed that Syria possesses extensive chemical and biological weapons stockpiles and it has threated to use them if the country comes under attack. President Barack Obama has said there would be enormous consequences if the U.S. sees any movement or use of the weapons.

Panetta was speaking at a news conference with Canadian Minister of National Defense Peter MacKay.

Women on ballot in Palestinian city's first election in decades

AP

Palestinian Maysoun Qawasmi, the 43-year-old party leader of By Participating, We Can, attends a meeting in the West Bank city of Hebron on Sept. 13, 2012.

By Yara Borgal, NBC News

HEBRON, West Bank ? ?By Participating, We Can!? that slogan has made a group of women in Hebron who are challenging male dominance the talk of their famously conservative Palestinian city.

Hebron, the West Bank?s largest city with 250,000 Palestinian residents, will go to the polls to choose city officials for the first time since 1976 on Oct. 20. And it will be the first time that one of the candidate lists on the ballot is made up entirely of women ? teachers, civil-servants, business women and volunteers. ??

The road taken by these women has not, however, been easy.

They have faced tremendous opposition from the local community, including comments directly to the women such as ?you are wasting your time.? ?

But Maysoun Qawasmi, leader of the bloc, and a 43-year-old mother of three sons and two daughters, remains undaunted.

Challenging the status quo
Qawasmi explained that the women initially faced legal objections to forming an all-female political bloc.

?I researched everything I could about election laws until I found out that there was no law against an all-female party competing,? Qawasmi said.?

She said some members of her own family initially resisted her challenging the status quo given the importance of tribal values woven throughout the fabric of society here.

For example, she explained that a local belief states, ?No matter where a woman reaches, her brain remains small.?

But Qawasmi, who wears a headscarf and describes herself as secular, has not lived by those words. She is a journalist and human rights activist. Politics are new to her, but she does not believe that her secularism puts her at any kind of political disadvantage.

?I go down and talk to people. I always tell my kids that social skills are more important than intellectual skills,? she said.

As a member of a prominent family clan in Hebron, her family name has been advantageous.

?We have a good CV and this is beneficial. But I am also up against five other candidates from the Qawasmi family. Besides, almost three quarters of my family clan support Hamas, so that?s at least 20,000 votes gone,? she said. (However, the Islamic group Hamas say they are boycotting this election).?

The idea of forming an all-female bloc stemmed from five years of work empowering women. For her and those around her, she had already crossed customary boundaries by becoming the manager of the Palestinian Wafa News Agency in Hebron.

The bloc had initially recruited 50 potential qualified candidates ? but that number whittled down to 11.

?Many high-caliber women had to pull out for various reasons,? she said. ?We had a highly qualified woman with a Ph.D. who had to pull out when a brother chose to run for elections in the same family; the male is given priority over the woman.?

Generally, running as a bloc increases the chances of getting more votes leading to a higher number of seats in the municipality. Qawasmi believes that her bloc is likely to gain support from young men and women.

?Women should represent society, but not to this extent?
Not everyone however, agrees with her vision.

Wadie, a 35-year-old chef from Hebron, offered his opinion on the matter.

?Our religion does not give a woman the right to enter the Shura Council (Consultative Council). It dignifies her to be in her house,? said Wadie, only chose to share his first name.

?I personally don?t believe she will get votes except from the Qawasmi family. If Qawasmi succeeds she will be fought against, she is not liked because she encourages freedom.?

He added a religious argument to his opposition. ?Eighty percent of Hebron is religious?I have to stick to the book of God. Women should represent society, but not to this extent.?

Wadie?s opinion may represent a high percentage of the men in Hebron, but there are others who are looking at more than gender with their vote.?

?It?s not a man or woman thing, people judge according to who works harder. If the rest of the bloc was as strong as [Qawasmi] they would have a chance at winning,? said Issa Amr, a 33-year-old male resident of Hebron.

Hoping other women will follow
For now, Qawasmi is satisfied that the bloc has been officially registered.

?I want to do what I can do. I want to do what must be done by decision makers and prioritize real issues that have not been addressed by the municipality,? she said. ?I hope this will enhance the role of women in the political sphere at the larger level. I do expect women in other locations to follow.? ??

Netanyahu warns it's 'very late' to stop a nuclear Iran

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Thursday that Iran will have enough enriched uranium to make a nuclear bomb by next summer and urged the world to draw a clear "red line" to stop it in its tracks.

Saying it was getting "late, very late" to stop Iran, Netanyahu flashed a diagram showing the progress Iran has made toward creating a bomb. He said Iran had already completed the first stage of uranium enrichment, and then he drew his own red line on the diagram to highlight the point of no return ? the completion of the second stage and 90 percent enrichment.

"Iran is 70 percent of the way there and ... well into the second stage. By next summer, at current enrichment rates, they will have finished the medium enrichment and move on to the final stage," Netanyahu said. "From there it is only a few more weeks before they have enriched enough for a bomb."

Netanyahu has repeatedly argued that time is running out to stop the Islamic Republic from becoming a nuclear power and the threat of force must be seriously considered.

"I believe that faced with a clear red line, Iran will back down ? and it will give more time for sanctions and diplomacy," the Israeli prime minister said. "Red lines don't lead to war, red lines prevent war ... nothing could imperil the world more than a nuclear-armed Iran."

Netanyahu's speech marks perhaps his final plea before Israel takes matters into its own hands. Israeli leaders have issued a series of warnings in recent weeks suggesting that if Iran's uranium enrichment program continues it may soon stage a unilateral military strike, flouting even American wishes.

The Obama administration has urgently sought to hold off Israeli military action, which would likely result in the U.S. being pulled into a conflict and cause region-wide mayhem on the eve of American elections.

Israel considers a nuclear-armed Iran to be an existential threat, citing Iranian denials of the Holocaust, its calls for Israel's destruction, its development of missiles capable of striking the Jewish state and its support for hostile Arab militant groups.

"Given this record of Iranian aggression without nuclear weapons, just imagine Iranian aggression with nuclear weapons," Netanyahu said.

Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes but Israel, the U.S. and other Western allies reject the claim. Four rounds of U.N. sanctions have already been placed on Iran.

A U.N. report last month only reinforced Israeli fears, finding that Iran has moved more of its uranium enrichment activities into fortified bunkers deep underground where there are impervious to air attack. Enrichment is a key activity in building a bomb, though it has other uses as well, such as producing medical isotopes.

While Israel is convinced that Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapon, American officials believe Iran has not yet made a final decision to take the plunge, even as it develops much of the infrastructure needed to do so.

Obama has repeatedly said he will not allow Iran to gain nuclear weapons and has said the U.S. would be prepared to use force as a last resort.Israel's timeline for military action is shorter than that of the United States, which has far more powerful bunker-busting bombs at its disposal, and there is great suspicion in Israel over whether in the moment of truth Obama will follow through on his pledge.

Speaking shortly before Netanyahu, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas accused Israel of ethnic cleansing for building settlements in east Jerusalem.

"It is a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people via the demolition of their homes," Abbas said in his speech to the U.N. General Assembly.

Netanyahu rebuked Abbas in his own address, saying: "We won't solve our conflict with libelous speeches at the U.N."

Israel conquered the eastern part of Jerusalem from Jordan during the 1967 Mideast War. It later annexed it but the move has not been internationally recognized. The Palestinians want east Jerusalem to the capital of their future state in the West Bank.

Abbas also said he has opened talks on a new bid for international recognition at the U.N., but didn't specify exactly when he will ask the General Assembly to vote.

"Intensive consultations with the various regional organizations and the state members" were underway, he said.

The Palestinians will apply to the General Assembly for nonmember state status.

That stands in sharp contrast to last year, when they asked the Security Council to admit them as a full member state, but the bid failed.

Abbas insisted that the new quest for recognition was "not seeking to delegitimize Israel, but rather establish a state that should be established: Palestine."

Palestinian officials said their bid is likely to be submitted on Nov. 29.

(AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar, File)

(AP) ? A key witness against convicted child molester and former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, known in court papers as Victim 1, has a book deal and will soon reveal his identity, a publisher announced Thursday.

Ballantine Bantam Dell said that "Silent No More: Victim (hash)1's Fight for Justice Against Jerry Sandusky," is coming out Oct. 23. The memoir will be co-written by the victim's mother and psychologist and "will share how he survived years of shame and secrecy, harassment and accusation, before reporting Sandusky's actions to the authorities, and will offer a hopeful and inspiring message for victims of abuse," Ballantine announced.

Victim 1, now 18, will reveal his identity on the day of the book's release in an interview with ABC's Chris Cuomo.

Financial terms for the book were not disclosed. But Ballantine, an imprint of Random House Inc., plans a donation to a charity for victims of child abuse.

Victim 1 first alerted authorities in 2008 and helped launch the investigation leading to Sandusky's conviction in June on 45 counts of child sexual abuse. Prosecutors said some of the assaults took place on the Penn State campus. Sandusky is scheduled to be sentenced next month and is likely to receive a sentence that will keep him in prison for life.

Victim 1 testified for the prosecution that Sandusky approached him through a summer camp for youth sponsored by The Second Mile, a charity for at-risk youth that the former coach had founded. Their initial contacts consisted of football games and swimming, and Sandusky would attend the boy's wrestling tournaments.

Physical contact began with a hand on his leg in the car, Victim 1 said, and he began spending nights at the Sandusky home in State College, about 30 miles from his own home in Lock Haven.

Kissing and back rubbing during those overnight visits, when he was in his early teens, progressed to oral sex, he testified, sobbing. He said Sandusky eventually told him: "It's your turn."

"I don't how to explain it, I froze," he said. "My mind is telling me to move but I couldn't do it, I couldn't move."

He told jurors his own behavior worsened, going from a well-behaved child to fights with relatives and bed wetting. His grades deteriorated. After Victim 1 began trying to avoid Sandusky, he asked his mother about websites for child molesters, "to see if Jerry was on there," he testified.

His mother set up a meeting with school guidance counselors, a process that led to the opening of a police investigation and produced criminal charges against Sandusky in November. Messages seeking comment left Thursday for Victim 1's civil lawyers, Slade McLaughlin and Michael Boni, were not immediately returned.

Officer critical after being shot during child porn raid

In California, one of the two veteran San Diego deputies wounded in a gun battle is recovering after being shot by a suspect accused of possessing child porn. KNSD's Tony Shin reports.

By Lauren Steussy and Tony Shin, NBCSanDiego.com

One of two veterans in the San Diego Sheriff's Department injured in a gun battle in Lakeside, Calif., is in critical condition, law enforcement sources said Tuesday night.

Detective Ali Perez and Sgt. Craig Johnson were reportedly shot and injured by Daniel Witczak after confronting him Tuesday afternoon in a Lakeside apartment complex, sheriff's department authorities said.

For more visit NBCSanDiego.com.

Witzcak, 30, was confronted by the deputies for allegedly keeping pornographic images of his girlfriend's children on his cell phone with the intention of selling them, according to his girlfriend.

???????

Perez was in critical but stable condition Tuesday night, sources told NBC San Diego. He was shot at least twice with a high-powered gun, including once in the stomach.

Johnson was shot in the arm and is expected to recover.

Confronted about child porn, man shoots two deputies in San Diego County

Lt. Duncan Fraser from the sheriff's department said both endured hours of surgery after being transported to the hospital.

?It?s too early to tell,"?Sheriff Bill Gore said of the deputies' condition, "but any time you have major gunshot trauma, there?s great cause for concern.?

NBC San Diego

A shooting victim arrives at the hospital following a gun battle in San Deigo, Calif.

Detective Perez is an 18-year veteran with the department who is assigned to the Child Abuse Unit. Sgt. Johnson is a 23-year veteran with the department who is assigned to the Santee station.

Fraser said he knows Perez well, and that for him to be assigned to the Child Abuse Unit demonstrates that he's "a good detective and has the ability to do a good, thorough investigation."

Perez was one of the deputies who found 15-year-old Charles Andrew Williams, the suspect in the Santana High School shooting of 2001.

The entire sheriff?s homicide detail was at the scene of the shooting investigating and canvassing the area, Fraser said. They secured a warrant to investigate the residence early Tuesday evening.

One of the deputies is married to an employee with the San Diego Police Department, SDPD Chief Bill Lansdowne said.

"This is a very difficult day for the San Diego County Sheriff's Department and everyone in law enforcement," Gore said to reporters after one of the deputies had just gotten out of surgery. "It?s a constant reminder of what our law enforcement officers in this country face every day."

Witczak was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital, according to a hospital source. There is no word yet on his condition.

The girlfriend told NBC San Diego that she was getting her two daughters ready for school when she found pornographic pictures of her boyfriend and her two daughters engaged in sex acts on his cell phone. Her boyfriend told her that he planned to sell the photos for $50,000 to a child porn site.

The woman said that after the deputies stormed the apartment, her boyfriend shot the two deputies with a high-powered rifle and then shot himself.

Pakistan Islamist accuses Obama of religious war on Muslims

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - One of Pakistan's most feared Islamists accused President Barack Obama on Wednesday of starting a religious war against Muslims over his handling of a video that mocked the Prophet Mohammad.

Hafiz Saeed, accused by India of masterminding the 2008 attack by Pakistani gunmen on India's financial capital Mumbai, said Obama should have ordered steps to remove the film from the Internet instead of defending freedom of expression in America.

"Obama's statements have caused a religious war," Saeed told Reuters in an interview. "This is a very sensitive issue. This is not going to be resolved soon. Obama's statement has started a cultural war."

The Obama administration has condemned the film, which ignited Muslim protests around the world as "disgusting".

But Western countries remain determined to resist restrictions on freedom of speech and have already voiced disquiet about the repressive effect of blasphemy laws in Muslim countries such as Pakistan.

"Obama has said he cannot block the film," said Saeed. "What does that say?"

He said the United States should take tough action against the makers of the film.

"If not, then hand them to us," he said, flanked by bodyguards.

U.S., INDIA WANT PAKISTAN TO DETAIN SAEED

India has repeatedly called on Pakistan to bring Saeed to justice, an issue that has stood in the way of rebuilding relations between the nuclear-armed neighbors since the carnage in Mumbai, where gunmen killed 166 people over three days.

India is furious that Pakistan has not detained Saeed since it handed over evidence against him to Islamabad. Washington has offered a reward of $10 million for information leading to Saeed's capture.

Saeed founded Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in the 1990s, the militant group which India blames for the rampage in Mumbai, where six Americans were among the dead.

He denies any wrongdoing and links to militants.

The $10 million figure signifies major U.S. interest in Saeed. Only three other militants, including Taliban leader Mullah Omar, fetch that high a bounty. There is a $25 million bounty on the head of al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri.

After the reward was announced, Saeed taunted the United States by holding a press conference at a hotel 40 minutes' drive away from the U.S. embassy in Islamabad, calling the bounty laughable.

On Wednesday, he again mocked the bounty, which has not led to Saeed's capture even though he openly moves around strategic U.S. ally Pakistan, fires up supporters at rallies and runs a huge charity.

"I am wandering in my own country," he said with a chuckle at a hotel where he and other Islamists gathered for a conference on the short film, called 'Innocence of Muslims'.

"So, what right does America have to put a bounty on my head? I have told America to start a case against me in court. So I can give my point of view. This is terrorism by putting a bounty on people's heads."

A Pakistani minister offered $100,000 on Saturday to anyone who kills the maker of the online video. A spokesman for Pakistan's prime minister said the government dissociated itself from his statement.

While many Muslim countries saw mostly peaceful protests, 15 people were killed in Pakistan during demonstrations over the video.

The United States has accused Islamabad of foot dragging in the case of Saeed.

Pakistan disputes U.S. charges of inaction against militants, saying it has suffered more casualties than any other country in fighting the Pakistani Taliban, other militant groups along the Afghan border and Islamist groups inside the country.

Saeed abandoned the leadership of the LeT after India accused it of being behind an attack on the Indian parliament in December 2001. But his charity is suspected of being a front for the LeT.

Voice control may cut drivers' gizmo distractions

Michael Dunning / Getty Images

As motorists use a proliferating number of personal electronic devices while driving, scientists are looking for ways to reduce the distraction factor. One possibility is voice-control technology that may some day permit drivers to use the devices hands-free.

By Dan Carney, NBCNews contributor

As personal electronic devices have proliferated in cars, and with the corresponding increase in crashes resulting from motorists trying to drive while using those gadgets, automakers have touted voice control as the solution that will permit drivers to safely text, tweet and update their Facebook pages to inform the world of the amazing fact that they are in the act of driving to work.

The problem with the notion of voice control as a panacea for distraction is that it assumes that attempting to command electronic devices by voice is not distracting. ?It is a great concept, and used in the right way it can work well,? explained Bruce Mehler, a research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is aware that poorly designed voice interfaces are distracting, so the agency has announced that it will issue rules for automobile voice-command systems in 2014. Until now, no one has determined what kind of system is less distracting and what is more distracting.

MIT researchers are working with Toyota?s Collaborative Safety Research Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. to find the answer to the issue.? Their first goal, according to CSRC senior principal engineer Jim Foley, is to establish the metrics that will measure the workload involved in the operation of a voice-command system.

This project?s overall goal is to produce some concrete information on what works and what doesn?t to help guide the federal rules when they come out.

To do this, the team has equipped a car with cameras to monitor drivers? eyes as they watch the road. Test subjects are also wired up with a heart-rate monitor and an instrument that measures galvanic skin response (like a lie detector) to assess their stress levels. Researchers will study the motorists while they perform tasks such as changing radio stations. The scientists will monitor the drivers while they are using physical controls and voice control.

The researchers also have a test in which they read off a list of numbers and the driver has to repeat a specific number from the list. Repeating the latest number produces a low strain on the brain. However, asking a driver to repeat the number that precedes the latest number cranks up the load on the brain to ?moderate?; when the driver is asked to recall the number that precedes that number, that results in a high cognitive workload.

This procedure allows researchers to measure the effects of hard work by the brain on driving skills, so when they find voice interface designs that apply a similar load, as demonstrated by the test subjects? heart rates and galvanic skin response, they can predict the deterioration in driving ability that will result.

In a simple reaction time test that takes the average driver about two-thirds of a second to respond under normal conditions, the same driver takes nearly a full second to respond when that motorist is called on to repeat the number before the most recent number read to him. At 60 mph, a car travels 29 feet during that additional third of a second, which underscores the need for quick response times.

Rhincrew Luke and Galtee Max in conflict for the Grade A2 500 metres flat race ?

The Grade A2 500 metres flat has pulled together quite a few entries who have the potential to bag the ?102 prize money of the event. The 500 metres race will be hosted by Sheffield on Monday, 24th September. One of the most commendable and prosperous hounds up for the challenge tonight is the two-year-old brindle dog, Rhincrew Luke.

The lightly raced hound has progressed from the Grade T races to the Grade A2 and A3. He has won two out of the five career outings and has improved drastically through the last five races.

The N. Melbourne trained won the Grade A3 500 metres flat race on 11th September, 2012 at Sheffield. Breaking out of the second trap and then ruling over half the distance had him on the other end of the wire in 29.36 seconds. His lead of three lengths shoved Tamara into the second slot.

Striking a back-to-back, Archaton Pine?s son took charge of the track from the second spot, and landed the race in 29.78 seconds.

With the final ? of a length in his favour, the two-year-old had Outlier Rudi settling in the second position.

The 5 to 2 entry will once again race in the blue vest after having drawn the second trap.

A candidate to look out for is the two-year-old, Galtee Max. The E. Parker trained has a good fan following at Sheffield, and has won at the venue at several occasions. Ever since 12th May, 2012, he has raced over 500 metres only.

Crash?s son has won twice out of the last four outings.

He captured the Grade A2 500 metres flat on 20th August, 2012 at Sheffield. Picking up pace just when it was required, and then dealing with the cluster tactfully, had him charging on from the first spot, and reaching the wire in 29.67 seconds.

Next he nailed the Grade A2 500 metres flat race on 30th August, 2012 at Sheffield. Shifting from first to second stall did not break the winning composure due to the winning technique that got him beyond the wire in 29.57 seconds.

Galtee Max has drawn the box right next to Rhincrew Luke, the first trap.

Best iPhone 5 PAYG nano-SIM options when traveling to the United States

If you have an iPhone 5, or any other unlocked iPhone for that matter, and plan on traveling to the United States, you may want to save yourself the hefty fees that come with roaming, and get a local, pre-paid or Pay As You Go SIM-card for your service. There aren't too many options -- American carriers love tying everyone into 2 year contracts -- but there are some worth considering.

T-Mobile Pay As You Go

Official word from T-Mobile is that they will be supporting the iPhone 5 just as they have any other unlocked iPhone. You can use it on a post paid or prepaid plan with no restrictions.

T-Mobile USA plans on carrying nano SIM cards that will be compatible with the iPhone 5 in mid to late October. If you're using an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S you can already pick up a micro SIM from T-Mobile. If waiting until mid to late October isn't an option for you, you can always buy a SIM cutter or cut your own down. It's hit or miss and we'd personally recommend waiting for the official one to hit.

While the iPhone 5 will work on T-Mobile USA, they could not confirm that the iPhone 5 would run on their LTE network. It most likely won't but you'll still be able to access their 2G network in most places, and their 3G/4G network in place they've begun supporting. (Most of T-Mobile 3G is on AWS spectrum, which is not supported by the iPhone.)

T-Mobile's prepaid plans start at $50/month and go up from there depending on how much data you need.

AT&T Pay As You Go

If you want to bring an iPhone 5 to AT&T you'll be out of luck when it comes to data if you want a no-commitment prepaid plan. While voice calls will work, AT&T has designed data not to be accessible. If you put a post-paid AT&T SIM into an unlocked iPhone 5 you will have access to data, which explains why CDMA iPhone 5's can use AT&T's network as long as the SIM you're inserting is from a contract account. AT&T uses IMEI information to detect account type and currently will not allow access to their data network on an iPhone 5 without a monthly plan.

If you're only in the United States for a short period of time and you're okay with only having voice service, it'll get you by but T-Mobile will almost always be a better option when it comes to using an iPhone on a Pay As You Go plan.

Other options

We're still polling the regional carriers and MVNO to see what other alternatives might be available. If you know of any, drop them in the comments, and we'll update as more and better information comes our way.

If you've had any luck activating an iPhone 5 on any other prepaid carrier in the United States, let us know in the comments!

Social Media For Your Reputation Online

?

Learning how to create and maintain your reputation online?is a vital part of your own success and cannot be overemphasized. Even a small business or owner managed business that is serious about online business needs to utilize all avenues of online reputation management and markeing to achieve the best results.

?

?

A good online reputation manager will tell you that the first goal of excellent social media is to research your target audience. That means listening to their needs, finding out what they want, and most importantly, finding out where your target audience can be found. Leveraging social media is one of the fastest ways to enhance your reputation online.

?

In depth analysis of your brand and your target audience online will enable you to continually develop new strategies and explore opportunities as they present themselves on the constantly changing World Wide Web. It?s not enough to just assume that ?everyone? is on Facebook and Twitter. Depending on the demographics of your target audience, you may have to place the focus of your social media campaign on another social network or drive your campaign in a different direction.

?

Seeing how top brands get it right you will notice that they only start a marketing campaign once they have the right analytics in place. Be wary, as a small business owner of any reputation management company who is able to get going on your campaign within an hour of your placing an order. Mass tweeting and untargeted Facebook status updates will do your business no good if the wrong people are seeing them. They may even do some damage.

?

Define Your Brand Online

?

Defining your target market when it comes to social media optimization means identifying the influencers in your market. The type of person who ?likes? and by extension, ?shares? your Facebook page is more important that getting mass numbers from a bulk order company. A good online reputation management company will always look at finding the right people who can spread your service or product message rather than taking a stab at it by looking for huge quantities of people who may not be interested and who have no influence in their community or demographic.

?

The Value Of Online Reputation Management

?

Social analytics are able to determine the users within your target market who are most likely to share information and in doing so influence their networks. Analysis of blogs and Facebook posts is just one way of tracking trends, keywords and finding out more about your target audience before you start your online reputation campaign using social media.

?

The most important tool that a good online reputation management company can bring to your business is the culture of analysis and focus; learning about your target market before you let loose on the internet.

Hands on with the HTC Windows Phone 8X and 8S

Will Windows Phones make their mark through colour? This week, HTC announced two new phones that will run Microsoft's upcoming Windows Phone 8 operating system: The HTC Windows Phone 8X and the Windows Phone 8S.

Like the Nokia Lumia 920, these are much more brightly coloured than any Android or Apple phone on the market. We got to spend some time with them, and we liked what we saw.

If you're familiar with HTC, you can probably figure out what these phones are all about just by looking at their names. Much like the recent Android-based HTC One X, S, and V, the Windows Phone 8S and 8X are HTC's mid-range and high-end Windows Phone 8 offerings. Think of the HTC Windows Phone 8X as the HTC One X or the HTC One S ? a premium device made with top-of-the line hardware. Meanwhile, the Windows Phone 8S is more like the HTC One V ? attractive in its own right, but less powerful to make it less costly.

HTC'S president of global sales and marketing, Jason Mackenzie, recently told us that the company intends to set itself apart from the rest of the Windows Phone 8 pack through "design." To that end, the HTC Windows Phone 8X and 8S are vibrant phones that share a bright colour palette with Nokia's Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, but take the look further with a tapered, super-slim shape.

First up is the HTC Windows Phone 8X, which is HTC's flagship Windows Phone 8 device. As you can see from the images on this page, the Windows Phone OS itself looks very much the same as you've seen elsewhere, since Microsoft keeps pretty close control over it. Microsoft still wants to keep some OS features under wraps, and we were only able to look at the home screen and the rather simple camera app. So we'll focus on the hardware.

    HTC Windows Phone 8X

The 8X is made of polycarbonate and comes in blue, red, or yellow. If you dig the more traditional smartphone look it comes in black too, but these bright colours are really where it's at.

The area surrounding the display is black, but the colour of the phone is echoed in the earpiece grille above HTC's logo. There's hardly any bezel around the glass at all, which makes the device feel really classy. The matte polycarbonate is soft to the touch and gives the phone a grippy texture. It's relatively lightweight and very comfortable to hold. The industrial design features rounded corners and tapered edges, and the colours keep things light.

The 8X doesn't have quite the same gloss-factor as the Lumia 920, but it's a touch subtler. We know that's crazy to say about a phone that comes in chartreuse, but the slightly rounder corners and tapered back are just a bit less commanding, a bit quieter.

The phone's 4.3in 720p HD, Super LCD 2 display looked sharp in person. HTC notes that, at 341 pixels per inch, it's denser than Apple's "Retina" display.

The phone has an 8-megapixel camera along with HTC's dedicated ImageChip. The HTC One series phones, with the same chip, have performed well as cameras; their flagship feature is snapping a bunch of photos very quickly and letting you pick the best one. There's also a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera with an f/2.0, wide-angle lens. And yes, the phone records stereo sound.

Windows Phone is a fast operating system in general, but the Windows Phone 8X is powered by a 1.5GHz, dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4, which should make for top notch gaming performance. It's the same chip that will be in the Lumia 920. HTC has worked closely with Microsoft to add its trademark Beats audio enhancements to the phone, which helps differentiate it from the Lumia line. Those include a 2.55-volt audio amplifier, which is supposed to deliver clearer sound through headphones and speakers than most phones do.

Other specs include 16GB of built-in memory (but no memory card slot), Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n including the 5Ghz band, Bluetooth 4.0, an FM radio, and NFC.

    HTC Windows Phone 8S

A number of these higher-end features needed to be toned down to cut costs for the less expensive Windows Phone 8S, though it too is a solid performer. The phone itself felt just as responsive as the 8X, although we didn't get a chance to run any apps on it. It won't be as fast overall, though, as its 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm S4 MSM8627 isn't as speedy a chip as the 1.5GHz affair powering the 8X.

The 8S has a similar tapered design to the 8X, and it's made of the same polycarbonate material, but it's smaller and flatter, with the speakerphone near the top of the back rather than the bottom. It comes in black, white, red, and blue. Two of the phones are two-tone, and they look great. We think the grey and yellow model, pictured above, looks particularly attractive in person. However, rather than having glass all the way down the body, the coloured plastic area below the screen signals that this isn't HTC's highest-end model.

The Windows Phone 8S features a slightly smaller 4in, 800 x 480 pixel Super LCD, which looked nice, though a bit dark. It has a 5-megapixel rear camera with 720p stereo video recording as well as HTC's ImageChip, but there's no front camera, so you won't be video chatting on this one.

Other specs include 4GB of storage (but a MicroSD memory card slot this time), Wi-Fi (but only 2.4Ghz), Bluetooth, Beats audio (but not the 2.55v amplifier) and that FM radio.

The HTC Windows Phone 8X and 8S will be available in November. While no official word has been forthcoming on pricing, the 8X has gone on pre-order for ?400, and the 8S for a budget friendly ?225.

Official confirmation of the exact release date and pricing should be announced at a Microsoft event towards the end of October.

HTC is squaring off against Nokia head-on with these devices. We can?t wait to get hold of these colourful new Windows Phone handsets, and put them through their paces with the full review treatment.

Mr. Thompson, who had directed theater productions at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Britain and the Kennedy Center in Washington, was on his way to research ?King John? and ?thinking about the fact that while we know Shakespeare didn?t go to university, his plays are full of the books he read. And they are full of references to food and drink.?

?His period, the Elizabethan era, is also the first time we have a number of printed cookbooks in English,? he said. ?So I suddenly found myself wondering: ?Can I use sauces to tell people about the sources???

He hopes to retail his Shakespeare-themed sauces at shops and supermarkets.

Last week Mr. Thompson and about 90 other fledgling entrepreneurs went through three days of ?boot camp? at the School for Creative Startups , a social enterprise whose yearlong program is designed to teach artists, designers and artisans how to set up and run successful businesses in order to make a living from their craft.

Jessica Huie?s company, Colorblind Cards, was born when her 7-year-old daughter Monet ?was going through a princess? phase.

?I was looking for a birthday card for her and all the princesses were blond, with straight hair,? she said. ?There was a complete lack of anything reflective of the reality of London as a multicultural city. So I started to make my own, and within seven months we were in Clintons,? a British retailer.

Five years later, Ms. Huie?s company has spread her message ? ?The only thing that should be separated by color is laundry? ? to the United States and South Africa, but she still is not making enough to quit her day job.

Andy Heller, currently the sole employee of Catered, a business that delivers a recipe for a meal plus all the ingredients needed to prepare it in a single box, said his new business started just as his old business went bankrupt.

?This has been one of the worst few weeks in my life,? he said. ?Last Tuesday I decided to liquidate my company. At the end of the week a huge bottle of oil broke and soaked the back of my car. Now I?m here hoping for a new start.?

The school is headed by Doug Richard, an American-born entrepreneur and investor best known in Britain for his two years on the BBC television program ?Dragon?s Den.? (The U.S. version is ?Shark Tank.?)

?The creative industries in Britain are one of the few vibrant sectors in the economy,? he said during a brief break from the stage at London?s Conway Hall, where, under a proscenium arch inscribed ?To Thine Own Self Be True,? Mr. Richard preached a gospel of salvation through work, as well as a close study of the market.

?The poor don?t buy pretty. They can?t afford it,? he said, urging producers of luxury goods like handbags or jewelry to match their sales pitches and Web sites to their target audience.

Why would a one-woman operation selling luxury children?s pajamas in traditional cotton prints need a Web site?

?You can be small and global,? Mr. Richard told the students. ?The Web changes everything.?

?There is a desire by government to drive forward entrepreneurship,? said Mr. Richard, who was recently asked by the government to lead a review of apprenticeships in Britain. ?But all their effort has been devoted to high-tech. It seems silly to want to copy Silicon Valley when we already are the Silicon Valley of the creative industries.?

Fewer than half of those who apply to the school are accepted. And though a few of the wealthier students pay the full ?3,000, or about $4,800, cost of tuition, roughly 90 percent pay only ?600. In return, students get 10 full days of instruction by Mr. Richard and experts in the fields of planning, production, marketing and distribution, including special sessions on how to price work and attract investors.

During their second term, students get access to ?titans of industry? to help mentor them. These include prominent supporters of the school like Luke Johnson, former chairman of Channel Four; the fashion designer Paul Smith; Nathalie Massanet, founder of the online retailer Net-A-Porter ; and Matthew Slotover, co-founder of the Frieze art fairs.

They also benefit from Mr. Richard?s abundant, frequently profane, advice on everything from men?s wear ? he?s a fan of Hiut jeans, which he wears with bright French-cuff shirts ? to the perils of dealing with small retailers.

?Small retailers suck at paying their bills because they?re all being hosed by rich landlords,? he said.

The school, now in its second year, was originally funded entirely by Mr. Richard, who started and sold a series of software companies in the United States before moving to Britain in 2002. Current funding comes from other, for-profit Schools for Startups, from corporate sponsors and from a group of ?angels.?

?Besides helping us to do good, they get first-look rights at any of the businesses that start here,? Mr. Richard said. However, graduates are under no obligation to allow Mr. Richard or anyone else to invest. Indeed, one of Mr. Richard?s lessons is that, while all businesses need capital to grow, outside investors should be regarded warily.

For Miles Campbell , a refugee from the corporate world who ?stumbled across the school on Twitter,? the boot camp was a crash course in turning a passion into a business. Mr. Campbell is a clock maker who hopes to sell his work to collectors. But with each clock taking many months to complete, he was having trouble deciding on what to charge ? or who might buy them. ?I can make a clock. I can design a clock. But I can?t take it to market,? he said.

Pia Townsend, a letterpress printer who sells her work online, said she thought the course ?would be good to help me get to the next stage without taking all the wrong turns and making all the mistakes I might otherwise make.?

Kelly Brown, who runs a company managing trips and events for corporate clients, hopes the course ?will give me more confidence in negotiating with clients.?

?I didn?t go to university, and this is a quick way to learn more about business,? she said.

Frankie Snobel is still supporting herself as a freelance journalist. But she hopes to use her skills and experience as a bartender to start a business selling cocktail-themed gift baskets.

As the students practiced their ?elevator pitches? ? 30-second descriptions of their businesses targeted at potential investors ? the school?s creative director, Medeia Cohan-Petrolino, acknowledged that not all graduates were likely to realize their dreams.

?I think it?s like sex education,? she said. ?Not everybody is ready to have sex when they take sex ed. Not everybody here is ready to go commercial. But when they are ready, they?ll be better prepared.?

?I?m not going to go hungry tonight,? Mr. Richard said of his motivations. ?But I?m still ambitious. I want to be on the cover of The Economist as the man who moves the G.D.P. of nations.?
