Scientists look at climate change, superstorm

Climate scientist Michael Oppenheimer stood along the Hudson River and watched his research come to life as Hurricane Sandy blew through New York.

Just eight months earlier, the Princeton University professor reported that what used to be once-in-a-century devastating floods in New York City would soon happen every three to 20 years. He blamed global warming for pushing up sea levels and changing hurricane patterns.

New York "is now highly vulnerable to extreme hurricane-surge flooding," he wrote.

For more than a dozen years, Oppenheimer and other climate scientists have been warning about the risk for big storms and serious flooding in New York. A 2000 federal report about global warming's effect on the United States warned specifically of that possibility.

Still, they say it's unfair to blame climate change for Sandy and the destruction it left behind. They cautioned that they cannot yet conclusively link a single storm to global warming, and any connection is not as clear and simple as environmental activists might contend.

"The ingredients of this storm seem a little bit cooked by climate change, but the overall storm is difficult to attribute to global warming," Canada's University of Victoria climate scientist Andrew Weaver said.

Some individual parts of Sandy and its wrath seem to be influenced by climate change, several climate scientists said.

First, there's sea level rise. Water levels around New York are a nearly a foot higher than they were 100 years ago, said Penn State University climate scientist Michael Mann.

Add to that the temperature of the Atlantic Ocean, which is about 2 degrees warmer on average than a century ago, said Katharine Hayhoe, a climate scientist at Texas Tech University. Warm water fuels hurricanes.

And Sandy zipped north along a warmer-than-normal Gulf Stream that travels from the Caribbean to Ireland, said Jeff Masters, meteorology director for the private service Weather Underground.

Meteorologists are also noticing more hurricanes late in the season and even after the season. A 2008 study said the Atlantic hurricane season seems to be starting earlier and lasting longer but found no explicit link to global warming. Normally there are 11 named Atlantic storms. The past two years have seen 19 and 18 named storms. This year, with one month to go, there are 19.

After years of disagreement, climate scientists and hurricane experts have concluded that as the climate warms, there will be fewer total hurricanes. But those storms that do develop will be stronger and wetter.

Sandy took an unprecedented sharp left turn into New Jersey. Usually storms keep heading north and turn east harmlessly out to sea. But a strong ridge of high pressure centered over Greenland blocked Sandy from going north or east, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Jennifer Francis of Rutgers University, an expert in how a warming Arctic affects extreme weather patterns, said recent warming in the Arctic may have played a role in enlarging or prolonging that high pressure area. But she cautioned it's not clear whether the warming really had that influence on Sandy.

While components of Sandy seem connected to global warming, "mostly it's natural, I'd say it's 80, 90 percent natural," said Gerald North, a climate professor at Texas A&M University. "These things do happen, like the drought. It's a natural thing."

On Tuesday, both New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Gov. Andrew Cuomo said they couldn't help but notice that extreme events such as Sandy are causing them more and more trouble.

"What is clear is that the storms that we've experienced in the last year or so, around this country and around the world, are much more severe than before," Bloomberg said. "Whether that's global warming or what, I don't know. But we'll have to address those issues."

Cuomo called the changes "a new reality."

"Anyone who says that there's not a dramatic change in weather patterns I think is denying reality," Cuomo said. "I told the president the other day: 'We have a 100-year flood every two years now.'"

For his published research, Oppenheimer looked at New York City's record flood of 1821. Sandy flooded even higher. This week's damage was augmented by the past century's sea level rise, which was higher than the world average because of unusual coastal geography and ocean currents. Oppenheimer walked from his Manhattan home to the river Monday evening to watch the storm.

"We sort of knew it could happen, but you know that's different from actually standing there and watching it happen," Oppenheimer said from a cell phone. "You don't really imagine what this looks like until you see it."

German official: renewable energy beats forecasts

(AP) ? An official says the share of electricity in Germany produced by renewable energy sources is expected to easily beat the government's forecast and reach almost 50 percent by 2025.

Stephan Kohler, who heads the government-affiliated agency overseeing Germany's electricity grid, said Monday the current strong expansion of wind, solar and other renewable power sources will easily top the official target of 35 percent by 2022.

But the Federal Network Agency head stresses more and swifter investment is needed to upgrade the electricity grid to cope with the influx of unstable renewable energies.

Germany decided after Japan's 2011 nuclear disaster to speed up phasing out nuclear power. Renewable energies' share in the country's electricity production since rose from 17 percent to 25 percent, driven by subsidies and investment incentives.

The agreement provides Groupe Atrium with access to Cruise Holidays?? suite of technology and marketing solutions for its growing franchise network and consortium members across Quebec.

Oil price steady on Chinese manufacturing survey

The price of oil hovered under $87 a barrel Wednesday as hopes that the slowdown in Chinese manufacturing might be stabilizing helped shore up sentiment across financial markets.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark oil for December delivery was down 12 cents to $86.55 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. That's a distinct improvement on the $1.98 fall on Tuesday, which left the price of oil at a three-month low of $86.67.

In London, Brent crude was up 22 cents to $108.47 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Tuesday's fall was sparked by a slew of disappointing earnings and forecasts released Tuesday by U.S. corporate giants. Revenue fell compared with a year ago at chemical maker DuPont, UPS, Xerox and others.

But sentiment improved after HSBC Inc. released a preliminary version of its monthly China purchasing managers' index, which rose to a three-month high of 49.1. That still was below the 50-point level that indicates a contraction in manufacturing but was a strong improvement from September's 47.9.

China's government has cut interest rates twice since June and is pumping money into the economy through higher investment by state companies and more spending on building subways and other public works.

Analysts at Danske Bank in Copenhagen said the improving index "suggests that the Chinese economy is bottoming out and is poised to recover moderately in the coming months as long as global demand does not weaken further."

A stronger dollar, however, weighed on oil prices by making crude more expensive for traders using other currencies. Hurt by Europe's deteriorating growth prospects and the bloc's debt crisis, the euro was down at $1.2942 on Wednesday from $1.2985 late Tuesday in New York.

In other energy futures trading in New York:

? Wholesale gasoline rose 1.36 cents to $2.6047 per gallon.

? Natural gas fell 3.9 cents to $3.496 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil rose 0.54 cent to $3.0362 per gallon.

FOR KIDS: The teenage brain

Adolescence triggers brain ? and behavioral ? changes that few kids or adults recognize

access Enlarge

The brain releases dopamine when something makes us feel good ? like pulling off an exciting trick. This ?feel good? response helps explain why teens sometimes take big real risks.

Teenagers must act on an endless parade of choices. Some choices, including smoking, come with serious consequences. As a result, adolescents often find themselves trapped between their impulsive tendencies (Just try it!) and their newfound ability to make well-informed and logical choices (Wait, maybe that?s not such a good idea!).

So what makes the teenager?s brain so complex? What drives adolescents ? more than any other age group ? to sometimes make rash or questionable decisions? By peering into the brains of teenagers, scientists who study brain development have begun uncovering answers.

Obama, Romney in final sprint to Election Day

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) ? The endgame at hand, President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney plunged into the final two weeks of an excruciatingly close race for the White House Tuesday with TV advertising nearing an astronomical $1 billion and millions of Americans casting early ballots in all regions of the country.

Increasingly, Ohio looms as ground zero in a campaign waged in tough economic times. The state's unemployment rate of 7 percent is well below the national average of 7.8 percent, Obama has campaigned here more than in any other state and Romney has booked a heavy schedule of appearances in hopes of a breakthrough.

The economy was the theme Tuesday as the two rivals put their final, foreign policy-focused debate behind.

Obama brandished a new 20-page summary of his second-term agenda and told a campaign crowd in Florida his rival's blueprint "doesn't really create jobs. His deficit plan doesn't reduce the deficit; it adds to it."

More than that, he said Romney changes his positions so often that he can't be trusted.

In Dayton, Obama said of his rival: "In the closing weeks of the campaign, he's doing everything he can to hide his true positions. He is terrific at making presentations about stuff he thinks is wrong with America, but he sure can't give you an answer about what will make it right. And that's not leadership you can trust."

Before flying to Ohio for his 17th trip of the election year, Obama also said with a hint of humility: "It doesn't mean that every candidate is going to get everything done all at once perfectly, but you want somebody to be able to look you in the eye and say, here's what I believe."

Romney countered in an appearance before a large, cheering crowd in Henderson, Nev. He said Obama wants a new term for the same policies that have produced slow economic growth and high unemployment for four long years. "He is a status quo candidate. ... That's why his campaign is slipping and ours is gaining so much steam," he said.

Romney's aides dismissed Obama's 20-page booklet as nothing new, and the former Massachusetts governor said of the president: "His vision for the future is a repeat of the past."

There seemed to be no end to the television advertising in a season when voters report they are heartily sick of it.

Material collected by ad trackers showed the two candidates and allied groups have spent or reserved nearly $950 million so far on television commercials, much of it negative, some of it harshly so. Romney and GOP groups had a $100 million advantage over Obama and his supporters, although variations in the purchase price made it difficult to compare the number of ads each side had run.

Increasingly, the two campaigns were focused on turning out their supporters in early balloting under way in more than half the states.

"Every single day right now is Election Day," Obama's campaign manager, Jim Messina, told reporters. On that, at least, Republicans offered no rebuttal.

About 5 million voters have already cast ballots according to data collected by the United States Elections Project at George Mason University, and about 35 million are expected to do so before Nov. 6.

While no votes will be counted until Election Day, the group said Democrats have cast more ballots than Republicans in the battleground states of North Carolina and Iowa by about 20 percentage points, while in Nevada, about 121,000 people have voted ? 49 percent Democrats and 35 percent Republicans.

Republicans have an early edge in Colorado, where Republicans have cast 43 percent of the 25,000 ballots to date, to 34 percent for Democrats.

Romney's camp projected confidence as the race entered its final phase, still riding an October surge in the polls that began after the challenger's dominant performance in the first presidential debate on Oct. 3 in Denver.

The Electoral College math made clear neither man had sealed a victory.

Wins in Ohio and in Wisconsin ? a state that Democrats have carried in the past six presidential elections ? would leave Obama only five electoral votes short of the 270 needed for victory.

That placed a premium on Ohio ? readily apparent from the candidates' campaign schedules and the millions in television advertising flooding the state.

Romney arrives in Cincinnati on Wednesday night after a Western swing, and is expected to spend all day Thursday and part of Friday campaigning across the state.

His running mate, Paul Ryan, is to deliver a speech on the economy Wednesday at Cleveland State University, something of an unusual event in a campaign with only two weeks to run.

Obama intends to fly into the state Thursday at the end of a two-day, cross-country trip into a half-dozen battlegrounds.

Vice President Joe Biden was in Toledo during the day before heading to Dayton to join Obama for a rally, mid-way through Biden's three-day tour of the state.

Barring a last-minute change, Obama appears on course to win states and the District of Columbia that account for 237 of the 270 electoral votes needed for victory. Romney has a firm hold on states with 191 electoral votes.

The battlegrounds account for the remaining 110 electoral votes: Florida (29), North Carolina (15), Virginia (13), New Hampshire (4), Iowa (6), Colorado (9), Nevada (6), Ohio (18) and Wisconsin (10).

Online Initiative Launches to Aid Low-Income Students

A new initiative in online learning intending to help low-income adults achieve an associate?s degree is set to launch in Colorado and then California before expanding to selected cities nationwide.?

MyCollege Foundation is partnering with Mount St. Mary?s College in Los Angeles in this program that aims to give students who are strong on grit and drive the chance to gain the skills and confidence to earn a two-year degree, without taking on extensive debt before advancing toward a bachelor?s degree.

Partly funded by a?$3 million grant?by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Portmont College at Mount St. Mary?s plans to offer four fields of study: business administration, computer science, liberal arts, and pre-health science. The concept is the brainchild of Portmount President?Srikant Vasan, developed in part while he served as entrepreneur-in-residence at the Gates Foundation.?

The Portmont program starts with face-to-face instruction with professors during kick-off orientation, followed by online coursework. It will also have support services to ensure that students graduate. ?

Students can transfer their credits to four-year institutions to complete a bachelor?s. Portmont will launch in Denver, followed by San Francisco. Classes in Denver start on March 4.

While the $5,240 per year price tag is higher than the average ($2,200) for Colorado community colleges, the cost of attending Portmont is significantly lower than studying at Mount St. Mary?s, an independent, Catholic liberal-arts women?s college. Tuition and fees there exceed $31,000 per year.

National figures show that student-loan debt has reached historic highs. About one in five households has debt tied to obtaining a degree. Compared with other demographic groups, a smaller percentage?(31 percent)?of Hispanics borrowed money to pay for school; the figures are 37 percent for whites and 35 percent for African-Americans, a national survey on?How America Pays for College?by the Sallie Mae Fund.

Still, the amount of money that students have borrowed to pay for college has ballooned. A?new report?indicates that 2011 college graduates had an average of $26,600 in student loans, about 5 percent higher than students who completed a degree program the previous year. Only six years ago, students were graduating with approximately?$19,600?in student loans.

Here are specifics, excerpted from a Gates Foundation e-mail:

  • All-in costs of $5,240 per student per year to ensure that students graduate with low to no debt.
  • Focus on noncognitive factors like grit and motivation as the primary method of filtering incoming students.
  • Core-capabilities-based curriculum and measurement designed to advance skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, communications, information literacy, teamwork, performance character, and learning to learn.
  • Personalized learning environment that tracks mastery of course material.
  • Rigorous curriculum incorporating problem-based learning and social learning to increase student engagement and ensure relevance.
  • Prescriptive course sequencing and social- and problem-based learning approaches.
  • ?Success Launch Process,? which goes beyond the cognitive topics typically addressed by college success courses and uses a series of four courses to develop intrapersonal and interpersonal skills correlated to work and life success.
  • Personal support network of success coaches, faculty, and peers so that each student benefits from tailored, proactive interventions using student-specific academic and behavioral data.
  • Technology platform offering visibility into key progress measures to students, faculty, and employers ? includes holistic performance monitoring, historical reporting, and predictive analytics ? enabling proactive, tailored interventions.

RealtyTrac Election Housing Report Finds ... - AOL Real Estate

RealtyTrac Election Housing Report Despite the many recent signs of life in the real estate market -- one possible explanation for why housing policy has remained largely absent from the presidential debates -- the reality is still grim. The market is far down from where it was in 2008, when the financial crisis was reaching its peak, let alone the days of the housing boom, according to online foreclosure marketplace RealtyTrac's "Election Housing Report."

Only 35 percent of nearly 1,000 housing markets are doing better than they were on the cusp of the last presidential election, when the meltdown was bearing down on the economy at full force, according to the RealtyTrac report released Monday.

The rest of the country's housing markets analyzed by RealtyTrac are in worse shape than they were then, hampered by a persistent glut of foreclosures, high unemployment and depressed home prices, according to the report.

"Even though there's a lot of good signs, the housing market is still a drag on the economy in many ways," said Daren Blomquist, vice president of RealtyTrac, adding that it still needs some "TLC."

The report found that home prices are below 2008 levels in a majority of counties and that distressed home sales continue to hog a bloated share of total sales. At least 10 percent or more of sales were distressed in most counties, and at least 25 percent were distressed in 1 out of 5 counties, according to the report. That's even considering that existing home sales and home prices are up significantly from last year, and home construction is higher than it's been in four years.

RealtyTrac looked at more than 900 counties nationwide and found that 65 percent of counties measured lower on at least three of five metrics that gauge market stability. The metrics were foreclosure starts (the number of foreclosures initiated), foreclosure sales, foreclosure inventory, the unemployment rate and home prices.

Stubbornly high unemployment and still-rock-bottom home prices appear to be the most consistent drag on the markets examined, Blomquist said.

Some Marked Improvements

Despite the sobering findings, the report also points to marked improvement since the height of the foreclosure crisis. Today, 1.5 million homes are in some stage of foreclosure, down from a peak of 2.2 million in January of 2011, Blomquist said. And foreclosure filings in September, at 180,000, were only about half of what they were in March of 2010, he said.

The markets that have made the most progress are often located in states that allow banks to repossess homes efficiently, Blomquist said. It's partly for this reason that conservatives oppose heavy-handed government action in the housing market and call for -- as Mitt Romney put it -- allowing the housing market to hit bottom, rather than nudging banks to eschew foreclosures.

"Judicial" states, which require a judge to sign off on a foreclosure, are generally moving towards recovery at a slower pace than in non-judicial states, Blomquist said.

"The delays have ensured that people aren't being improperly foreclosed on," he said. "But I also see the other side: 'Well, these foreclosures still have to be dealt with at some point.' "

Daily multivitamin can reduce cancer risk for older men

multivitamin
A study has found that multivitamins may reduce the risk of cancer for men over 50. (Fotolia)

Report an error

Daily use of a common multivitamin modestly reduces the risk for cancer for men aged 50 and over, according to a study published online last week by the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The research project

  • 14,641 men
  • 7,317 were given daily multivitamins
  • 7,324 were given a placebo
  • Participants were followed for an average of a little more than 11 years.

The results

  • Those taking the multivitamin had an 8% reduction in risk of developing cancer.
  • 2,669 cases of cancer were diagnosed among the participants, including 1,290 of the 7,317 men who took the multivitamin and 1,379 of 7,324 assigned to placebo.
  • The protective effect of multivitamins was stronger in men aged 70 or older, with no parental history of cancer, and in men with a history of cancer.
  • Multivitamin use was associated with a 27% lower cancer risk in men with a history of cancer prior to the study.

Now what?

Studies are still inconclusive as to what this means for women and men under the age of 50.

Before deciding that you are going to start taking any daily vitamins, take a look at your diet. If you?ve already got a good balanced diet, chances are you may not need any vitamins at all.

Then there is probably nothing here for you. For the rest of us, see what you think.

Turn Your Self-Defeating Habits Into Money-Making Skills

Hey Rich Schefren, here again.

I?ve got something really important I want to share with you.

Give me just a couple minutes and I?m going to teach you some things most people have never thought of ? all part of a revolutionary new strategy to help you become more successful than you ever dreamed of.

But first, I have a confession to make.

Most people know me by my success.

Building 3 multi-million dollar businesses. My Internet Business Manifesto. My online business success and coaching.

But, I haven?t always been successful.

And certain personal flaws have held me back all my life.

For one thing, I?m a procrastinator. And, I?m a perfectionist.

Then, to top it all off, I have ADD.

It hasn?t been easy, to say the least.

Now logically, you might think ?Geez, someone with all that baggage couldn?t possibly succeed.?

And that?s how it seemed for a while.

But here?s the thing?

I finally figured out how to ?out-think? my flaws.
And once I figured that out ? success just seemed to flow!

Recently, I?ve started to see just how many other entrepreneurs are being held back by their flaws? same as I was.

Now, some people recognize that personal flaws are blocking their success. And they waste a lot of time and money trying to eliminate these ?bad? behaviors.

Let me tell you how I outfoxed my biggest flaws? procrastination and perfectionism.

I was giving a presentation at a conference, and I knew I had to kick myself in the ass to get my program off the ground.

So, after my presentation I offered 25 openings for one-on-one coaching.

Whoa ? the program sold out instantly, and I got 40 commitments on the spot.

Now I was in a jam.

I had promised to have several months worth of lessons ready for my program ? even though I hadn?t come up with them yet.

Of course, I felt accountable to my new clients.

I don?t like to disappoint, because I?m also obsessive about delivering on my promises.

So I forged ahead and set the dates and times for the calls right away.

And that forced me to come up with the material in time for the calls, or be completely humiliated in front of my clients.

In the end, it was a huge success. The program went off without a hitch.

All together, my first 25 clients increased their online revenues by over $40 million in just 18 months, and the rest is history. I was on my way.

But just to be clear:
I never ?cured? my procrastination or perfectionism?
I just learned how to make it an advantage in what I do.

And lately, my attention has been on what?s holding my clients back.

Just recently, I realized that I was watching one person after another struggling with this same problem.

They get stuck in the same cycle, thinking that they have to change themselves to overcome some flaw that?s handicapping them.

And that?s when it hit me like a ton of bricks.

They all think the same thing I used to?that they had to somehow change themselves to become successful.

That?s when I realized just how many entrepreneurs were out there who needed the strategies I have to get around their own flaws.

Because in reality, trying to change who you are is usually just another path to failure. It?s simply too difficult.

They can?t see that there?s a faster, easier way.

That there?s no need to take the long, hard road of trying to change who you are.

That there is ? just like I set for myself ? a simple way to walk right around your flaws.

I?m talking about a thinking process that will not only make those flaws irrelevant, but will change them into some of your biggest strengths.

Behaviors like self-doubt, procrastination, being distracted, or having trouble deciding what to do next can all simply be planned around.

By using the simple techniques I?m going to show you, you can easily go:

From Information Overload ? to having clarity on what information you can use right now, and what information you can get to later?
From Procrastinating ? to starting projects sooner than expected and finishing them on time, every time?
From Being Distracted ? to knocking out your To-do list every single day of the week.
And from indecision ? to flying towards your goals like never before.

I?m telling you this because I hear these problems all the time from my clients.

They think they?re carrying some baggage that?s dragging them down from success.

And I always have to tell them it?s nonsense.

It?s just their thinking process that?s holding them back.
The Most Successful Entrepreneurs We Look Up To

Employee late submitting FMLA certification? - Business ...

Employees are supposed to get FMLA certifications back to their employers within 15 days. But it?s not a good idea to terminate an employee simply because you didn?t receive the paperwork on time.

The FMLA regulations include an out for employees who miss the deadline for reasons beyond their control. That can easily happen when a doctor?s office is overwhelmed with paperwork.

Recent case: Gary was an assistant store manager for Walmart. When he began having panic attacks, he asked for time off and was told he?d have to take disability leave.

The store manager gave him an FMLA packet, which included instructions for his doctor to fill out a medical certification. The doctor did, certifying that Gary had hypertension, depression and anxiety and needed FMLA leave.

Walmart claimed it never got the form despite a fax confirmation from the doctor?s office showing the date the form was faxed. Gary was fired for unapproved absences.

He sued, alleging interference and retaliation. He pointed out that the regulations allow for extenuating circumstances. Gary said he would have followed up if he had known Walmart never received the form.

The court said his case could go to trial. (Drake v. Wal-Mart, No. 2:10-CV-679, MD FL, 2012)

Final note: Courts hate needlessly draconian rules. Always give employees a reasonable chance to submit paperwork. Jumping the gun makes it look like you were looking for an excuse to fire someone.

Hospital: At least 23 killed in Nigeria violence

POTISKUM, Nigeria (AP) ? Hospital records in a northeast Nigeria city show at least 23 people were killed in recent violence by the radical Islamist sect Boko Haram.

An Associated Press reporter saw the records Saturday at Potiskum General Hospital in Yobe state, where attacks have been going on since Thursday. The reporter also saw some of the dead still being held in the hospital's mortuary.

The death toll could be higher as Muslims in Nigeria's north bury their dead quickly, sometimes without notifying authorities.

The violence in Potiskum continued Saturday, as witnesses said gunmen raided the Potiskum home of a former Nigeria Customs Service official and killed him and his son.

Boko Haram is waging an increasingly bloody guerrilla fight against Nigeria's weak central government. More soldiers arrived in the city Saturday afternoon.

Content Marketing To A 'Multi-Screen World' (Research) | Business ...

In a recent research report, ?The New Multi-screen World: Understanding Cross-platform Consumer Behavior,? Google (in partnership with Sterling Brands and Ipsos) set out to uncover and understand how consumers are content marketing to a multi-screen world - cover image, CMIinteracting with media in their everyday lives. Their findings are quite enlightening for content marketers, who are continuously looking for new ways to ?break through the clutter? and grab the attention of their target customers ? people who are constantly distracted by TV, social media, online content, and more, often all at once.

Here are some highlights from the study:

Keep your eye on the ?device?

Do you know how your consumers are interacting with your content? According to this report, 90 percent of the time it?s via a ?screen-based? device (smartphones, computers, tablets, or television). (Don?t fret you print-lovers! 10 percent of media interactions are through the traditional methods many of us still love, such as newspapers or magazines.)

content marketing to a multi-screen world - Image A, CMI

What?s interesting is how much time people are spending on each of these devices (on average):

  • 17 minutes on smartphones
  • 30 minutes on tablets
  • 39 minutes on computers
  • 43 minutes on TV

This means that, when designing your content strategy, you may want to take into account how much time you actually have to grab and hold a readers? attention (especially for smartphone users, who may be more apt to scan rather than read through an entire article). To do this, try some of these tips:

  • Use more engaging (and brief) email subject lines or article titles.
  • Have a quick summary or lightweight blurb at the start of a research report.
  • Post engaging, mobile-friendly photos that people can easily ?scroll through.?

Different devices are used for different objectives

If you learn what the motivations are behind your consumers? content consumption, it can greatly impact your content strategy. Not only are consumers spending varying amounts of time on different devices, but they are using them in different ways, as well. Understanding what they are looking for when using these various devices will help you write, package, and distribute your content across different channels.

For example:

  • Computers are used mainly to find information (and are typically used at home).
  • Smartphones are used for more lightweight content consumption ? and to keep people connected.
  • Tablet use is motivated more by entertainment purposes than anything else (browsing the net, playing games) and is viewed as a more ?leisurely? activity.

This great quote from a research participant sums up how many consumers feel about their various devices:

?My phone is? my go-to device. When I need to be more in depth, that?s when I start using my tablet? and then moving to the laptop, well, for me that?s business. That?s work.?

Multi-screening: Blessing or curse?

In the Google report, multi-screening takes on two forms: sequential usage (moving from one device to another sequentially) or simultaneous usage (using multiple devices at the same time ? which is probably what many of you are doing right now). This means people are not only using different devices for different activities, but sometimes using several devices at once. This can be a golden nugget for content marketers, if your strategy involves being prepared to keep your consumers engaged at all times, no matter what they need, what device is being used, or what else is ?on.?

Let?s first cover sequential usage, as 90 percent of people use multiple screens sequentially in order to accomplish a specific task. The top activities performed when moving between devices are:

  • Browsing the internet
  • Social networking
  • Shopping online
  • Searching for information
  • Managing finances
  • Planning a trip
  • Watching an online video

content marketing to a multi-screen world - Image 1, CMI

The most common ?starting point? for most of these activities is with? surprise, surprise? a smartphone. From the smartphone, most consumers continue the activity on a PC, with fewer people continuing the activity from there onto a tablet.

content marketing to a multi-screen world - Image 2, CMI

For more complex activities, such as planning a trip or managing finances, a computer is the more common place that people start from.

Raise your hand if you?re using multiple screens right now!

Distractions, anyone? According to the report, people use an average of three different screen combinations every day.

content marketing to a multi-screen world - Image 3, CMI

When planning your content distribution, think about when your consumers might be most ?open? to the various types of content you?re delivering.

For example, when is ?down time?? This report found that 77 percent of the time we?re using a TV, we?re using another device, as well. What are the key times when your consumers are most likely to engage with your content, and on which device are they most likely to do so? Determining this information for your target audience could result in a significant lift in your content?s reach.

The most common simultaneous multi-screen activity is browsing the internet.

Whether consumers are watching TV, using a computer or tablet, or just flicking through their smartphones, the study finds that most people are doing a few activities fairly consistently:

  • Searching the internet
  • Using social media sites
  • Emailing

content marketing to a multi-screen world - Image 4, CMI

However, this doesn?t always mean their attentions are limited (although this is often the case). Some of this activity can be complementary ? meaning that people may be watching a TV show while exploring the show?s app on their tablets. Thus, having your content appear at the right time, contextually, can make all the difference to consumers who may be triggered to search for, plan, or buy something during their regular browsing activities.

The Google report calls these spurts of information-gathering ?micro moments.? Consumers are constantly online, and switching among different devices depending on what they need, where they are, and what?s most convenient. This gives content marketers even more opportunities to engage with consumers all day long. Making your content ?front and center? during this spontaneous information-gathering is key to driving people to your information ? but the experience must be consistent. With many people starting a search in one place and finishing the activity on another device, it means that your message, design, and overall content experience should be as seamless and consistent as possible.

Finally, with all this sequential usage and multitasking, the report further emphasizes the importance of making your content very easy to find, share, store, email, and save for later use. If your consumers find an article that they don?t have time to read just then (say, while browsing their smartphones waiting for a train), ensure that there?s an easy way for them to save it or share it for future use (i.e., when they are home at their laptops during their ?down time?). This also means your content should be tailored based on the different screens your consumers may be using (very visual for Pinterest, short and compelling for social media, and more robust on a blog).
