If you're planning for a new garden this year you can go ahead and kill weeds or grass in the area by covering the future garden beds with old carpet. The carpet will block sunlight to any weeds, and if your future garden is now part of your lawn you'll need to kill the grass anyway.
Home improvement expert Danny Lipford's weblog advises that if you're using synthetic carpet for this project to remove the carpet after planting as artificial carpet fibers will take a long time to decompose leaving your garden non-organic and giving you the chore of pulling up a partially-rotted chunk of carpet from time to time as it slowly breaks down. If you're not concerned with organics or have natural fibers you may want to consider keeping the carpet once you've planted your garden with seedlings?if you cut small X's in the carpet the seedlings will get plenty of sun but the carpet will remain to block competition from weeds. Furthermore rain will soak the carpet and slowly release that water into the soil, reducing watering needs.
Starting a garden in your average suburban backyard takes an investment of labor, but the fruits of that labor are often very rewarding. Used carpet castoffs can help reduce some of that toil. Cardboard also works well for this job, but is obviously very temporary and like carpet may be considered more of an eyesore than commercial weed barrier cloth. Your mileage will definitely vary.
