The jet-setting ski-crowd has been flocking to Gstaad, Switzerland for decades, but it?s been a century since a proper grand hotel entered the scene. (The early 20th century saw the openings of the Grand Hotel Park in 1910, the Grand Hotel Bellevue in 1912, and the Gstaad Palace in 1913.) Enter the brand new luxury resort, Alpina Gstaad, which opened its doors last month.
The Alpina?s traditional and elegant design?think Heidi?s cottage, but way bigger, and far fancier?relies heavily on light woods and stone accents. Oversized, hanging cowbell-lamps and folk art throughout the property pay stylish homage to Switzerland?s pastoral history. Hotel facilities include a Swiss ?St?bli? restaurant, a Japanese restaurant from Megu, a Cuban cigar room, and a Six Senses Spa.
And when you happen to look out your balcony (each of the hotel?s 56 rooms and suites comes with its own private balcony or terrace), the jaw-dropping Alpine scenery will remind you that some of the world?s best skiing lies right at your feet.
