Malcolm Harris: #MyBigFatFabulousGayWedding: Why Proposals Should be Private

2011-10-20-20110616rGAYMARRIAGElarge570.jpg

On June 24th, 2011 at 11:15 p.m. New York State historically passed Same-Sex Marriage. At 11:16 p.m., roughly two minutes after the gavel struck, I quietly got down on one knee and asked my partner of nine years to be my husband. Isn't that romantic? It might be romantic. but it's actually a big fat lie. However, it is my way of attempting to rewrite history. The truth of the matter actually lies in the headlines of the Associated Press that ran the following day:

NEW YORK (AP) -- As the news flashed around the globe that New York state had legalized gay marriage, New York fashion designer Malcolm Harris didn't waste any time. He dashed off a Twitter message to his boyfriend of nine years: "Will you marry me?"

So there it is in a nutshell. On the historical evening that New York State proudly moved into the 21st Century, I sent my boyfriend, who was out celebrating a friend's birthday, what I thought was a private message over Twitter. As I am firmly Team Facebook, the world of Twitter at the time was pretty new to me. I had absolutely no idea the huge difference between sending a "tweet" and a "message". So there I was attempting to send a sweet, playful and most importantly, private message that had now been inadvertently broadcasted throughout the twittersphere. For a brief moment, I could somehow sympathize with former NY Senator Anthony Weiner - minus the whole sorted/inappropriate messages and weiner shot thingy. But this misguided tweet had definitely opened a rainbow colored Pandora's Box of its own and it was too late for @mistergolightly and @mistereditor to turn back now.

2011-10-20-willyoumarrymetweet.jpg

Before we had a moment to process any of it, the proposal had already tripped us directly into the spotlight fantastic of the gay movement. Overnight we were being heralded as the de-facto poster boys for same-sex marriage. Our emails, telephones, text messages, etc. were all immediately flooded with interview requests from The New York Times, Huffington Posts, People Magazine, Entertainment Tonight, NBC, ABC, LOGO - you name or abbreviate it and they were calling. We even received calls from Hollywood agents wanting to represent us. LOL... My partner, K. Tyson Perez, and I were both scratching our heads and thinking, "All of this because of a marriage proposal?"

But we quickly learned that in the scheme of things, this was much more than just a simple proposal of marriage. For the gay community it was finally being able to put faces, flesh and bones to a long hard fought battle. And for the media it had all the elements of a perfect storm - romance, controversy, taboo and even technology. One reporter said to me, "Do you realize you guys are the first gay couple to go viral?" Even though I knew exactly what he meant, it still sounded as if he thought we were doing something terribly naughty.

With all the well-wishers and media attention that literally began swarming around us, it wasn't until I looked down at my vibrating mobile and checked the caller identification did I realize I hadn't made one very important call - Mother Darling.

I must admit, at first I didnt know whether I should answer the phone or send the call straight to voicemail. But then I remembered my voicemail was full and Mother Darling wouldn't' be able to leave a message. So I decided to answer it. I was for sure she had no idea about "the proposal" and was perhaps only calling to give me her bi-weekly run down on deaths, scandals, convalescing friends and church gossip (in that order). I will share with you, that somewhere between my mother's piety and her vanity, therein lies the secret of my very existence. But that's a story for another column, Dr. Phil and/or session with my therapist.

From the second I heard Mother Darling's query filled - Hello? - I knew the jig was up. Before I could plead my case, she had already begun relaying to me, in dramatic detail, how she just happened to be driving home from the market where she purchased a dozen organic eggs at $5.89, a gallon of soy milk at the unbelievable price of $6.75 as well as some sort of honey and lemon infused green-tea, when there it was - my voice blaring through her car via 1010 WINS. I must admit I took a teeny-tiny bit of pleasure imagining her clutching her pearls and pulling off to the shoulder of the road as she listened intently to the news of her son's impending same-sex nuptials being reported in the automated/droning tone of 1010 WINS (over and over and over again). But to my disappointment as well as delight, her delivery wasn't as hyper-fatalistic as I had envisioned. Instead it was a bit dry, but not cold - shaken, but not stirred. And then it hit me - Mother Darling was still in the processing phase of her current "dilemma". But you must also understand that everything for my mother from choosing what hat to wear to church or what route to take to the market - is a dilemma. However, the gay dilemma is one she still hasn't quite been able to fully accept or resolve.

You see my darling mother has had to put up with the gay "dilemma" since I was 16 years old. Just in case you were wondering, there was no big coming out at Thanksgiving or Christmas or any of that clich? non-sense for me. As a Southern raised homosexual, Mister GoLightly has always prided himself on the subtleties of polite society. So early one random evening as I was heading out with friends, my mother asked me in a very inquisitive, yet slightly sarcastic tone, "So what time should I expect you home, young man?" To which I casually responded, "Don't worry, I'll be back before curfew. By the way, I'm totally gay... And mustard is definitely not your color Mother Darling." In hindsight, I'm positive that wasn't the best way to spring the news, but at the time I figured we might as well get that bit out of the way before my teacher called to tell her I had been caught kissing a boy behind the stadium bleachers.

Luckily the call from the school never came but it was too late. You see Mother Darling had already raided the "psychology" and "how to" sections of our local bookstore before I made it back late that night well past curfew. Not a word was said that evening, but the next morning it was apparent she was safely armed with all the proper reading material and technical terms to successfully deal with the gay dilemma as well as to remodel our kitchen. I never did figure out the correlation between homosexuality and cabinetry, but here we were once again, some 20 odd years later, at the same proverbial fork in the road.

I tried my very best to give her a quick report on all that had happened over the past 24 hours since the proposal, but she cut me off at every turn. She went on to fill me in on a married woman from her church that was allegedly having an affair with a deacon until his untimely demise. Apparently the old deacon had suffered a heart attack or stroke during their last tryst in a cheap motel room on the other side of town. Fortunately for me, just before she reached the climax of the story, as if it could get any more salacious, I received another call. When I looked down at the caller ID I realized it was the producer from the "major cable network." I quickly put my mother on hold, as I realized that our conversation had somehow helped me to make my decision, and clicked over to have a chat with the producer. When I returned to Mother Darling I informed her that I would have to call her later as the television producer on the other line needed some additional information about our upcoming wedding ceremony. The pause in our conversation was pregnant with panic, fear and dilemma. But before Mother Darling could get another word in, I said, "Oh yeah, Tyson said YES! I'm thinking about wearing white. And by the way, we're getting married on national television."

The moral of this story is that proposals, in my opinion, should be done in private. They shouldn't be blasted across jumbotrons, written in the sky, or tweeted across twitter. If we are very lucky we only get to propose once and this should be a sacred moment shared between two people that want to spend their lives together in the union of marriage. Take it from Mister GoLightly - lesson learned.

To be continued...

Obama acts to ease burden of student loans (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama is taking steps to ease the burden of student loans, the White House said on Tuesday, potentially helping millions of cash-strapped college graduates in a tough economy.

Obama plans to accelerate a plan to cap student loan payments at 10 percent of income, bringing it forward to start in 2012 instead of 2014.

"Steps like these won't take the place of the bold action we need from Congress to boost our economy and create jobs, but they will make a difference," he said in a statement.

The loans initiative will be the third such move by Obama in as many days, following action to aid homeowners and boost hiring of military veterans. The White House wants to show he is an activist president battling a "do-nothing" Congress.

The loan changes do not require approval by Congress.

Republican lawmakers blocked a $447 billion jobs plan put forward by Obama last month because it raises some taxes.

Students helped push Obama into the White House in 2008. As he campaigns for reelection in 2012, Obama's public approval ratings have fallen near 40 percent, the low of his presidency, because of discontent with his economic stewardship.

Americans owe more on student loans than on outstanding credit card debt, and total loans outstanding are slated to exceed $1 trillion this year, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

The rise in private student lending and growing debt defaults have also been highlighted by the Occupy Wall Street protesters.

Obama will announce the student loan measure in Denver on Wednesday as he wraps up a swing through western states that will be vital to his re-election campaign in 2012.

The White House estimates the loan changes could cut monthly payments for 1.6 million graduates.

Student debt will also be forgiven after 20 years, compared with 25 years under current law.

More than 36 million Americans have federal student loan debt, but only 450,000 have so far taken advantage of the existing income-based repayment program.

Obama will also make changes to allow 6 million students to bundle together certain federal loans to allow a single monthly payment, reducing the risk of default caused by juggling multiple debt obligations.

The option will be open from January and those that take it up will also get a 0.5 percentage point cut in the interest rate on some of their loans, lowering monthly payments and potentially saving them hundreds of dollars in interest.

"College graduates are entering one of the toughest job markets in recent memory, and we have a way to help them save money by consolidating their debt and capping their loan payments," said Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

'Rogue' man-eating sharks actually want whales

After the attack on an American diver by a great white shark off the coast of Australia, the rumor mill is swilling with talk of a "rogue man-eating shark" that developed a taste for humans, killing three men over the last two months.

The most recent attack happened on Saturday when a great white shark attacked and killed American diver George Thomas Wainwright. Two previous attacks on humans by great whites have occurred in the last two months, one killing an Australian swimmer on Oct. 10 and the other a body boarder who was lethally attacked on Sept. 4.?

Australian waters usually see about one fatal shark attack per year; but these waters are the primary home of the great white shark, a large species that can grow up to 20 feet long. Last year, 14 unprovoked shark attacks on humans were reported in Australia, only one of which was fatal.

Scientists say the recent attacks probably came from three separate sharks."There's whales moving by that coastline at this time of the year, and the white sharks follow," George Burgess, a researcher at the University of Florida and curator of the International Shark Attack File, which catalogs shark attacks around the world. "The chance of an individual shark being involved in all three of these incidences is astronomically low. They travel 40 to 50 miles a day." [ Image Gallery: Great White Sharks ]

Sharks gone rogue
Rogue sharks, typified by the shark in "Jaws," are thought to repeatedly attack humans, though such behavior is abnormal for sharks.

"The theory of a 'rogue' shark is unlikely, sometimes a single shark may be responsible for subsequent attacks done in the same area, in a clustered pattern," Fabio Hazin, a researcher at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco in Brazil, told LiveScience in an email.

"This, however, tends to be more a consequence of the shark and human beings being close together than to a vicious nature of some shark specimens."

One example of such a rogue, the only that Burgess has seen in his 40 years of cataloging shark attacks, happened in Egypt last year. A ship of imported sheep from New Zealand headed to Egypt had been dropping their dead along the way. This lured a shark to the shore, where it attacked five people, killing one.

"That was a very different species and different ecological situation," Burgess told LiveScience. "It was a once in a lifetime experience for myself, after 40 years as a keeper of shark attacks."

A rogue white? Not so fast.
Australia's great whites are currently in the midst of their annual migration (they follow the whale migration paths up the western Australia coast), which would bring them into contact with humans. Three different sharks, following the same path up the coast and passing the same human-infested bathing and boating areas, are likely responsible for the recent attacks Burgess said.

"This is a very unlikely candidate for one to have stayed around and gotten the taste for humans, particularly in the case of the white shark, which is so highly migratory," Burgess said.

There were several possible reasons why shark attacks in the area might be higher than normal, Burgess said. It's possible that changes in climate may be shifting migration patterns, bringing sharks and humans closer together. Warmer temperatures would also bring more humans into the water. [ 10 Incredible Animal Migrations ]

I'd rather win the lottery
Internationally, the number of shark fatalities is down, though the actual number of attacks is rising; shark attacks hit a global 10-year high in 2010 with 115 human-shark incidents that year. That increase is probably due to increased human presence in shark territory. Only six of these incidents ended in a dead human, though.

"We should always be cautious when entering into the sea, since it is an environment different from the one we live in," Hazin said. "We should not forget that drowning kills thousands and thousands more people every year than shark attacks."

The shark attacks in Australia have prompted calls to kill off any sharks in the area, which Premier Colin Barnett is said to be considering. Researchers are against such a shark hunt, since there is no way to know which shark or sharks are responsible for the human deaths without killing them and cutting open their stomachs.

"The region will be better off if the resources being given to hunt the killer shark would be used to study the situation ? and reduce the chances of it happening again," Burgess said. "The only answer we are going to find is if we scientifically study the situation carefully and understand better the movement patterns of the sharks."

Caterpillar 3Q profit soars, raises year view (AP)

NEW YORK ? Strong demand for construction and mining equipment should boost Caterpillar Inc.'s revenue through next year, even as the health of global economy remains in doubt.

The company's optimistic forecast followed double-digit growth in third-quarter earnings and revenue, which it reported Monday. The robust quarter and outlook lifted the stock price of the Peoria, Ill.-based company by nearly 5 percent, a much bigger gain than the broader market.

Sales and earnings at the company, the world's largest maker of construction and mining equipment, give insight into growth and investment around the world.

Caterpillar, which makes everything from black-and-yellow excavators and harvesters to diesel-electric locomotives, earned $1.14 billion, or $1.71 per share, between June and September. That was up 44 percent from $792 million, or $1.22 per share, a year earlier.

Revenue surged 41 percent to $15.72 billion, and demand for machinery came from across the globe. Developing nations continued to need construction equipment as their economies prosper, while developed countries, whose growth is weak, are replacing older equipment.

Higher commodity prices are attracting more investment in mines and fueling demand for mining machinery.

"Although there is a good deal of economic and political uncertainty in the world, we are not seeing it much in our business at this point," Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Doug Oberhelman said.

Caterpillar expects to earn $6.75 per share on sales of $58 billion in 2011. That's up from its previous forecast of $6.25 to $6.75 per share on revenue of $56 billion to $58 billion.

It thinks revenue next year will increase 10 and 20 percent from 2011 to between $63.8 billion and $69.6 billion.

The company is continuing to add jobs ? nearly 5,000 between June and September alone. As of Sept. 30, it had about 149,000 employees, up more than 20 percent from a year earlier, including staff gained from acquisitions. About 5,600 of those jobs were added in the United States, where unemployment remains stuck at slightly more than 9 percent.

The company's performance was better than Wall Street expected. Excluding its $7.6 billion acquisition of a mining equipment maker, Caterpillar earned $1.93 per share on revenue of $14.58 billion. Analysts polled by FactSet Research were expecting a profit of $1.63 per share on $14.84 billion in sales.

Many a business traveler pack their bags on Sunday, to prepare for their Monday trip, meeting or conference and they do do packing just the bare essentials. Laptop, sports coat and maybe an extra dress shirt, just in case. There is no need to over pack or over prepare because it?s just business as usual, but on the road. Once the meeting Monday is over there is on extra day to rest or get back to normal. That is normal, working on the road, getting home late and back at it Tuesday.

Tonight in Jacksonville has to be business as usual for the Baltimore Ravens. Yes it adds a bit more that it?s ?MNF? (Hank Williams Jr or not) but the Flacco/Rice led offense & the Haloti/Ray Ray led defense need to keep in mind that this is just a business trip. Nothing more nothing less. Get this win and get back home. Everyone else in the NFL is now into week 8, we are focusing in week 7, by definition we are behind?. Tonight is the night the Ravens show America that Baltimore football is all business.

My ?S.K.I.N. (score, key info, note) Ravens 26-10 ? Flacco has to establish the run against Jax good front 7 ? Defense has a TD.

Jindal wins re-election as Louisiana governor (Reuters)

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) ? Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, seen as a rising star in the Republican Party, won re-election on Saturday as voters largely ignored his nine poorly funded challengers.

"You've chosen to give me another four years as your governor," he told supporters at his Baton Rouge campaign headquarters less than an hour after polls closed. "We've got a lot more work to do over these next four years."

With more than 99 percent of precincts reporting, Jindal carried 66 percent of the vote with his nearest challenger, Democratic school teacher Tara Hollis, taking 18 percent. None of the remaining eight candidates moved out of single digits.

Jindal, whose vote count allowed him to bypass a November runoff, has been viewed as a potential vice presidential contender. But he has said he would serve out his term as governor if re-elected.

"I will use every day, every hour of these next four years to make Louisiana the best it can be," he said.

Once seen as a possible presidential contender himself, Jindal has since endorsed Texas Governor Rick Perry for the Republican nomination.

"Jindal doesn't aim low," said Bernie Pinsonat, a Baton Rouge political analyst and pollster. "I don't think anybody in Louisiana thinks that Bobby Jindal doesn't have ambitions to be president," he said.

Pinsonat said the key to what Jindal did next was the 2012 presidential election. "If (Democrat) Barack Obama is re-elected, Jindal will throw himself 100 percent into running for president in 2016," Pinsonat said.

The possibility that Jindal, 40, will not serve out his full second term contributed to a hotly contested race for Louisiana's lieutenant governor seat.

Secretary of State Jay Dardenne carried 53 percent of the vote against 47 percent for Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser in that race.

Louisiana's open primary system pits candidates of all parties against one another on one ballot. If no candidate gets more than 50 percent of the vote, the highest contenders meet in a runoff election.

It was Jindal's third race for governor. He lost in 2003 to Democrat Kathleen Blanco, who won a runoff with 51 percent of the vote. In 2007, he beat 12 other candidates and won 54 percent of the vote without a runoff.

Turkey urges Iran, US to avoid tensions (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? Turkey's foreign minister has called on the United States and Iran to avoid escalating tensions following the allegations that Iranian agents plotted to kill the Saudi ambassador to Washington.

Ahmet Davutoglu said Friday he did not believe Iran would engage in such a plot but added that the United States insists it has evidence for it.

Davutoglu was speaking at a joint news conference with his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi who rejected the U.S. allegations as "weak, baseless and empty."

Two men, including an alleged member of Iran's special foreign actions unit known as the Quds Force, have been charged in New York with conspiring to kill the Saudi diplomat.

Boston police website hacked: 'It's not funny'

A Boston Police Department website was hacked. At least 2,000 names and passwords have been posted online.

The group claiming responsibility said they support the Occupy Boston movement.

Boston Police are warning some of their members that usernames and passwords were compromised.

The investigation into who hacked the system was widening and the F.B.I. was brought in to assist.

Police believe the radical element that calls themselves? ?Anonymous? has hacked into their system along with others across the country.

?Our internal computer system has been breached and I believe compromised,? said Tom Nee, President of the B.P.P.A.

The Boston Police Patrolman?s Association urgently told members to change their passwords after the rebel group posted their names and passwords online.

The group claimed they took aim at the Boston Police for their unprovoked brutality.

In a statement ?Anonymous? said, ??future acts of aggression against our movements will be met with a vengeance??

?It?s outrageous and it?s not funny. We will pursue this to the fullest extent of the law,? said Tom Nee.

At the height of the demonstrations dozens of protestors were arrested and arraigned.

Some protestors said they did not want help from ?Anonymous.?

?There was the one instance of police brutality, that does not mean all of them so you cannot go and target all of them,? said Shaunn Cartwright of Occupy Boston.

?I don?t see how actions like that would support the movement and I would encourage people to disassociate themselves with that because I think it?s wildly incongruent with the message of the movement,? said another protestor.

At Boston Police headquarters they said their website had not been breached but they encouraged all members to change their passwords.

Also on Saturday night, 21 acts of vandalism and graffiti were being investigated by Boston Police on buildings in downtown Boston.

Police believe the vandalism is linked to the Occupy Boston protests.

In Boston, only names and passwords were posted while in Birmingham, Alabama social security numbers were leaked onto a website for the public to see.

Watch Apple?s new iPhone 4S Siri ad (Yahoo! News)

The new Siri virtual assistant is without a doubt the highlight of Apple's new iPhone 4S, so we knew it wouldn't be long before we saw some TV spots showcasing its chatty ways. And just like clockwork, the company is now rolling out its first ad that lets everyone know what the familiar-looking smartphone is now capable of.

The brief 30-second ad shows new iPhone 4S owners of all ages putting Siri to good use ? asking for everything from directions and weather reports to tips on formal wear. It's a great way to show the scope of information that Siri can provide, and will undoubtedly lead to some interested prospective owners. Not to mention make everyone with a iPhone 4 pine for an upgrade.

Curiously, the ad only shows Siri responding to one of the inquiries, possibly because the virtual assistant's rather robotic tone might turn off otherwise excited consumers. Check out the full ad above and let us know what you think in the comments!

How hemp got high: Cannabis genome mapped

ScienceDaily (Oct. 20, 2011) ? A team of Canadian researchers has sequenced the genome of Cannabis sativa, the plant that produces both industrial hemp and marijuana, and in the process revealed the genetic changes that led to the plant's drug-producing properties.

Jon Page is a plant biochemist and adjunct professor of biology at the University of Saskatchewan. He explains that a simple genetic switch is likely responsible for the production of THCA, or tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, the precursor of the active ingredient in marijuana.

"The transcriptome analysis showed that the THCA synthase gene, an essential enzyme in THCA production, is turned on in marijuana, but switched off in hemp," Page says.

Tim Hughes, co-leader of the project, is a professor at the Terrence Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research and the Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Toronto. He explains the team compared the potent Purple Kush marijuana variety with 'Finola' hemp, which is grown for seed production. Hemp lacks THCA, but does contain another, non-psychoactive substance called CBDA, or cannabidiolic acid.

"Detailed analysis of the two genomes suggests that domestication, cultivation, and breeding of marijuana strains has caused the loss of the enzyme (CBDA synthase), which would otherwise compete for the metabolites used as starting material in THCA production," Hughes says.

Essentially, this means that over thousands of years of cultivation, hemp farmers selectively bred Cannabis sativa into two distinct strains -- one for fibre and seed, and one for medicine. Marijuana has been used medicinally for more than 2,700 years, and continues to be explored for its pharmaceutical potential.

"Plants continue to be a major source of medicines, both as herbal drugs and as pharmaceutical compounds," Page says. "Although more than 20 plant genomes have been published, ranging from major food crops such as rice and corn, to laboratory models like Arabidopsis, this is the first genome of a medicinal plant."

The researchers expect that sequencing the Cannabis sativa genome will help answer basic questions about the biology of the plant as well as furthering development of its myriad applications. These include strains for pharmaceutical production, high-producing industrial hemp plants, and hemp seed varieties to produce high-quality edible oil. Hemp seed oil is rich in omega 6, an essential fatty acid, and its fibre is used in the production of textiles.

According to the Canadian Hemp Trade Alliance, about 25,000 acres of the crop were sown in Canada in 2010, much of this in Manitoba. Due to hemp's association with marijuana, farmers need to be licensed through Health Canada to grow the crop. Canadian medicinal marijuana is currently produced under Health Canada contract with Prairie Plant Systems, a biotechnology company based in Saskatoon.

Find the Hidden Colors of Autumn Leaves

bring science home fall leaf color chemistry activityWhat color are autumn leaves really turning?: Use some simple chemistry to separate out molecules that give fall leaves their vibrant colors. Image: George Retseck

Key concepts
Plants
Seasonal changes
Colors

Introduction
Have you ever wondered why leaves change from green to an amazing array of yellow, orange and red during the fall? Leaves get their brilliant colors from pigments made up of various size, color-creating molecules.

During the warm, sunny months, plants use their leaves to turn sunlight into food energy, a process called photosynthesis. This primarily uses a pigment that reflects green light, which gives the leaves their characteristic color.

In autumn, when colder, shorter days arrive, many kinds of trees no longer make food energy with their leaves and, consequently, no longer need the green pigment. The leaves' other pigments, some of which were already there during summer, become visible. Uncover these hidden colors of fall by separating plant pigments with a process called paper chromatography. What colors will you see?

Background
There are many types of pigments in plant leaves. Chlorophyll makes them green and helps carry out photosynthesis during warm, sunny months. As fall arrives and the green, food-making color fades, other pigments such as yellow, orange and red ones become more visible.

Xanthophylls are yellow pigments, and carotenoids give leaves an orange color. Photosynthesis also uses these pigments during the summer, but chlorophyll, a stronger pigment, overpowers them. These pigments take more time to break down than chlorophyll does, so you see them become visible in fall leaves. They're also found in carrots, daffodils, bananas and other plants that have these vibrant colors. There are also anthocyanins, intense red pigments that aren't made during the summer, only appearing with the final group of the fall colors. These molecules also give the red hue to apples, cranberries, strawberries and more.

Although a leaf is a mixture of these pigments, you can separate the colors using a method called paper chromatography. This process dissolves the pigments and allows them to be absorbed by a strip of paper. Larger molecules have a harder time moving in the woven paper and get trapped in the paper first, whereas smaller ones travel farther along the paper. This process separates the mixture of pigments by molecular size?and by color.

Materials
???? Leaves at different stages of turning colors (the more the better?about 10 of each color is best)
???? Scissors
???? Strong, sturdy drinking glasses (three to four)
???? Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol)
???? Wooden spoon or another wooden utensil with a blunt end for crushing leaves
???? Fork
???? Very small bowls or tea-light candleholders (three to four)
???? Strong, white, heavyweight, ultra-absorbent paper towels
???? Ruler
???? Pencil
???? Toothpicks
???? Plate (or other surface to protect working area from stains)
???? Tall glass jars, such as mason jars (three to four)
???? Clothespins or large paper clips (nine to twelve)

Preparation
???? Collect some leaves that are at different stages of color change during the fall, preferably from the same tree.
???? Separate your leaves into distinct groups arranged by? color, with about 10 large leaves per group. Separating them into green, yellow and red piles may be easiest.
???? Prepare paper towel strips, making three to four strips for each group of leaves. Cut up a strong, thick paper towel into long, one-inch-wide strips. They should be long enough to touch the bottom of the tall glass jars or mason jars and still extend over the top. With a pencil, gently draw a line one inch from the bottom of each strip.

Procedure
???? Cut the leaves into small pieces with scissors. Put each group of leaves into the bottom of a drinking glass.
???? Add one tablespoon of rubbing alcohol to each glass.
???? Crush the leaves into the rubbing alcohol using the blunt end of a wooden spoon for about five minutes, until the solution is dark. How has the color of the alcohol changed?
???? Let the solution sit for 30 minutes in a dark place indoors.
???? Use a fork to remove any leaf pieces from the solutions and discard these, while leaving the liquid in the glass.
???? Pour each solution into a very small bowl, and leave it in a dark place indoors to allow more of the alcohol to evaporate. You will be ready for the next step when you stir your solutions with a toothpick and they seem thicker.
???? Thoroughly stir each colored solution with a toothpick, using a different toothpick for each solution so as not to mix the colors.
???? Using a toothpick for each color, smoothly and evenly "paint" some of each solution across a paper towel strip on the pencil line you drew. Because some plant pigments can stain, you should do this on a plate so that the color will not stain your work surface. For each color, do this using a total of three to four strips.
???? Allow the strips to dry.
???? While the strips are drying, pour enough rubbing alcohol into each glass jar to just cover the bottom. Prepare one jar for each color solution.
???? With the dry strips, carefully put the pigmented end into the jar until the strip just touches the alcohol. Drape the top of the strip over the jar's opening and secure it with a clothespin. Make sure that each strip is not touching the jar's sides, but only contacts the jar where it is secured. Place and secure strips from the same solution into the same jar, but keep them from touching each other.
???? Let the glasses sit for 30 minutes and watch the paper strips. What is happening to the color of the paper strips?
???? When one of the colors reaches the top of a strip, remove all strips and let them dry.
???? Look at the different dried strips. How are the colors in the strips different? Do strips from different color solutions have unique colors, shared colors or both?
???? Look at the order in which the colors appear on the different strips. Is the same color on the same place in different strips or is it in a different place? Do the colors appear in the same separation order or in different orders on each strip?
???? Tip: If your chromatography comes out pale, try using more leaves, cutting them up into smaller pieces and/or "painting" more of your solution onto the pencil line on the paper towel.
???? Extra: You can use this same procedure to compare the color molecules in many different plant sources. For example, you could try red cabbage, blueberries, carrots, beets, spinach, flowers or other intensely colored plants. How do their mixtures of color molecules compare?
???? Extra: If you find a tree with a wide range of colors, you can repeat this procedure using leaves at more intermediate stages of change. An especially good source of a wide variety of leaf colors is aspen trees.

Gabriel Aubry Loses in Court, Mandated Supervisor to Stick Around

Gabriel Aubry has lost to his ex-girlfriend in court once again.

The Canadian model was hoping a judge would lift the ruling that obligated a nanny to be present any time he was with he and Halle Berry's three-year old daughter, Nahla. The actress had opposed such a request.

And a judge sided with the Oscar winner yesterday, upholding the original agreement between these exes for supervised visitation only. Sources tell TMZ Aubry is peeved over the outcome because he feels a lack of alone time is affecting his relationship with his child.

Berry also defeated Aubry in court this summer when a judge ruled she could bring Nahla with her on a movie shoot in Europe.

In June, Berry accused her ex of neglect. Court documents cited a specific incident in which Aubry allegedly placed the former couple's daughter in danger. No other details have been revealed.

Perry campaign hits back at Romney with web ad (The Ticket)

The day after former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's presidential campaign unveiled a harsh web video that criticized Texas Gov. Rick Perry for his public speaking skills, Perry's campaign hit back with its own video focusing on Romney's support for government-mandated health care and for once hiring a landscaping company that employed illegal immigrants.

While Perry and Romney have never been the best of friends, tension between the two appears to be higher than ever.

You can watch the video of the Perry spot here:

At a Republican presidential debate Tuesday in Las Vegas, Nevada, Perry went after Romney for hiring on the landscaping company, a charge that provoked?the most heated exchange between them yet this election cycle.

Six Miles Offshore: The Wreck Of Montebello

Risk Assessment Of Potentially Polluting Shipwrecks

This map highlights the many potentially polluting shipwrecks along U.S. coastlines.

Notes

The Montebello is located on California's Central Coast, near Morro Bay. The NOAA established a Remediation of Underwater Legacy Environmental Threats (RULET) Database to track and categorize shipwrecks, and areas of high priority and concern. ?

A task force is evaluating the risk posed by a sunken oil tanker, the SS Montebello. It went to the bottom after being attacked by a Japanese submarine during World War II. State and federal officials want to know if the ship is still carrying its cargo of oil, and if that oil could escape.

The SS Montebello, shown in its glory days, was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine during World War II.

At stake is a coastline known for its stunning scenery and wildlife sanctuaries. The task force was put together a couple of years ago at the urging of state Sen. Sam Blakeslee.

"I actually was reading in my local weekly newspaper about this amazing history of a shipwreck that occurred off our coast and described the fact that there still may be 3 million gallons of oil down at the bottom of the ocean," Blakeslee says. "And no one in all these 70 years had really stepped up and said, 'It's our responsibility to understand what the threat is to the coast.' "

In fact, for most of the past 70 years, most people didn't even know the oil tanker was down there.

"I didn't even talk about it because I was called a liar," says 92-year-old Richard Quincy, the last surviving member of the crew of the Montebello.

Quincy says they knew the voyage would be dangerous, and took a vote on whether or not they wanted to go. But with the nation at war, "everyone had to give something."

On the morning of Dec. 23, just before dawn, Quincy was on watch when he saw the outline of a Japanese submarine in the water. Then came the torpedo.

"It was dark when we got hit," Quincy says. "It went so fast. It was hard to keep track of time. We were anxious to get off because we figured it was going to catch fire."

But the ship didn't catch fire because the torpedo struck the Montebello in front of the oil tanks. Everyone on the crew escaped in lifeboats, and the ship went to the bottom nearly intact, says Robert Schwemmer, a marine historian with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He's seen the Montebello from a manned submersible twice, in 1996 and 2003.

"The ship looked like it just left the dock, except the fact that the upper wheel house is missing," Schwemmer says. "So we have 90 percent of the Montebello sitting there squarely on its keel. The question is: Is the oil on board?"

Schwemmer was on the Nanuq, the mother ship for the exploration of the Montebello. The Nanuq is owned by Global Diving & Salvage, and it sailed down from Seattle and basically parked above the sunken tanker. Onboard are unmanned remotely operated vehicles, or ROVs, that are being sent below to study the wreck. Schwemmer says they can do a better job than the manned submersibles.

Video of the dive on the Montebello.

"When you do a submersible survey, you are always moving," Schwemmer says. "The ROV allows us to actually come up to different locations, and stay on station, and study them in more detail."

And a detailed assessment of the threat posed by the Montebello is important to more than just California's coast. Kerry Walsh, a project manager with Global Diving & Salvage, says that's because the Montebello's not the only potentially polluting wreck that's been identified by the NOAA.

"This wreck represents the first one in many hundreds of wrecks that NOAA [is] looking at that are around the United States that have oil in them," Walsh says.

Those wrecks are strewn along both the East and West coasts, and the detailed examination of the Montebello could be a blueprint for evaluating them, says Walsh. There are a lot of steps in that evaluation. First, the ROV cleans portions of the Montebello's hull, then uses ultrasound to measure the thickness of the metal.

"Once that's done, then we bring in the nuclear tool, which is a diagnostic scan device, and we press that up against the hull, and we measure through the steel, and we can detect by the return signal from the neutron backscatter what's behind it," Walsh says.

You get one kind of signal if it was seawater and another kind of signal if it was oil, but they'll want to confirm those results. Walsh says Global Diving & Salvage is also taking samples from the cargo tanks with a tool they've invented that both drills into the tank and plugs the hole.

"And if that doesn't work, we have another device that's a magnetic patch that will seal it up forever," Walsh says.

And if it turns out that the Montebello is still carrying her cargo of crude, the biggest challenge of all may be figuring out how to protect the sensitive Central Coast from the threat lying 900 feet below the waves.

Kelsey Grammer on Camille: Fame Whore!

Kelsey Grammer was a guest on Piers Morgan Tonight yesterday and spent a portion of the interview hyping his upcoming Starz drama, Boss, a portion talking about his acting career in general - and a significant amount of time bashing the heck out of ex-wife Camille Grammer.

"Camille asked for a divorce really almost the first day we were married," Kelsey told the CNN host. "If you say you want a divorce enough times, you're going to get one."

So why did it take 13 years and two children before this couple split? It's unclear, especially because the actor believes Camille "married me because I was Frasier." He says she only cared about getting famous. Therefore...

"[The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills] was my parting gift to her," Grammer said. "It was my way of saying, 'Look, you always wanted to be famous. Here you go.' "

Kelsey says he has "no contact" with Camille, though we all know they do battle almost every week in court. Still, he and his kids are doing "great," the actor insists, while he has nothing but positive words for fourth wife Kayte Walsh:

"It was insane," he said, describing their meeting on a plane. "It was like all the planets had danced together into a segregated charm on our behalf."

Capitals Beat Panthers 3-0, Tomas Vokoun Stops 20 Shots (PHOTOS)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Tomas Vokoun blanked his former team with a 20-save performance, and the Washington Capitals beat the Florida Panthers 3-0 on Tuesday night to improve to 5-0, the best start in franchise history.

Marcus Johansson, Alexander Semin and Jason Chimera scored for the Capitals, who led 1-0 heading into the third period.

Washington and Detroit are the only NHL teams to win all their games thus far. The Capitals' four-game winning streak at home to start the season is also a club record.

Vokoun was rarely tested, but he couldn't afford a slip-up in a tightly played defensive struggle. It was the 45th NHL shutout for the 35-year-old goalie, who played the previous four seasons with Florida. He left for the Capitals after failing to reach a contract agreement with the Panthers over the summer.

Pressed into extensive action while Michal Neuvirth works to return from a foot injury, Vokoun improved to 4-0 this season.

Vokoun wasn't the only player matched up against his old team. Florida's Matt Bradley and Tomas Fleischmann are former Capitals, along with goaltender Jose Theodore, who watched from the bench for the first time this season.

Florida's Jacob Markstrom stopped 29 shots in his first NHL start, but was victimized by Johansson in the first period and by Semin at 1:49 of the third period. Chimera scored into an empty net.

That was more than enough to provide the Capitals with their first 5-0 start. Each of their previous four games were decided by one goal, and three of those went to overtime.

Deezer goes global, streaming music service coming to over 100 new countries

Many folks here in the good ol' US of A are familiar with streaming music services like Pandora, Rhapsody and Spotify, but may not be aware that Deezer dishes out tunes to those across the pond. Just last month it launched a mobile service on Orange, France's largest carrier, and now the company's looking to gain a far larger geographic footprint. Deezer plans to launch in over 100 more countries in the near future, and is in the process of partnering up with a bunch of other telcos to do it. It's taking an unusual approach to expansion, going for aurally under served areas instead of joining the fray in the biggest music markets in the US and Japan -- Indonesians and Brazilians gotta get down on Friday too, you know. The reason for doing so? Acquiring rights in the US is difficult (and expensive), but global licenses are easier to come by, which lets the Deezer diaspora occur by the dozen. So rejoice music lovers around the world, you'll soon be able to get your Deezer on.
