Nursing Facilities: Impact of Aging Baby Boomers
Individuals born during the years of 1946 to1964 will be the largest population of people in the future. ? There are two groups of boomers, 1) Early Boomers ? those born between 1946-1955. ? 2) Late Boomers ? those born during 1956-1964. ? According to statistics, by the year 2030, approximately 78 million aging boomers will significantly impact the U.S. economy. ? Currently the Baby Boomers have had the biggest impact on society more than any other age group in this century, and they will no doubt impact the health care system.
During the years of the 60?s 70?s and 80?s, many changes were taking place in nursing homes through out America. ? Family dynamics were changing and women began to work outside the home. ? With both parents working full and part-time jobs, there was little time to care for elderly parents. ? Elder parents were moved from their homes into skilled nursing institutions.
In the 80?s there was a fast moving trend to build
new nursing facilities that were designed after hospitals. ? These institutions provided apartment-like settings with minimal assistance and independent living. ? There were social rooms and numerous events that residences could participate in. ? Investors saw an opportunity to make money and eagerly pursued the chance to buy facilities. ? These investors lacked the industry knowledge and needs and were intended to make quick money with no effort or input from the nursing facilities.
In the 90?s there was a decrease in elder care combined with state and federal cutbacks. ? Many nursing facilities had minimal skilled workers on staff. ? Workers who had no experience and were paid minimum wage, performed the majority of work. ? Staff abused many residents and some were subjected to bodily harm resulting in death. ? Families of the elderly filed numerous lawsuits, adding to the increase in costs to operate the nursing facilities. ? As a result several nursing homes were forced to close.
